EAST STROUDSBURG – The PSAC announced its 2018 field hockey all-conference and major award winners on Thursday afternoon, with six East Stroudsburg University players among those honored.
Seniors
Bailey Quinn and
Ashley Ceschini each earned first team All-PSAC accolades, while seniors
Paige Harrold and
Kelli Shapiro were second team honorees and freshman
Celeste Veenstra and junior
Emily Spangler landed on the third team.
The Warriors have now received 28 All-PSAC selections over the past five seasons. As a testament to the continuing depth of the program, 15 different players have combined for 17 selections in the last three seasons alone.
Quinn (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) is one of the two repeat all-conference performers during that span, as she achieved second team status a year ago after contributing a team-high 13 goals during ESU's run to the Division II Final Four. Quinn has recorded 10 goals and two assists through the first 18 games this season. She had the game-winning strike in a 3-2 win at Merrimack to begin the season, and she added multiple-goal efforts against LIU Post (Sept. 12), IUP (Oct. 20) and Millersville (Oct. 23).
A three-year starter, Ceschini (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) moved into the center back role for her senior season. She has contributed seven goals and four assists while aiding a backline which has produced shutouts in 10 of 18 games on the year. Ceschini's first collegiate goal was the game-winner in a 5-0 over defending DII runner-up LIU Post. She added two goals last Wednesday vs. Molloy and a career-high five points (2 G, 1 A) in last Saturday's 6-1 win at Mansfield.
Harrold (York, Pa./Central York) leads all active ESU players in career appearances (81) and starts (58). She was honored as the NFHCA DII Offensive Athlete of the Week on Sept. 26 after contributing two goals in a 4-0 victory at Shippensburg, the first of two regular season wins for ESU over the two-time defending DII champion Raiders. Harrold has four goals and four assists overall so far this fall, and she has a total of 13 goals and 24 assists throughout her collegiate career.
Shapiro (Ocean, N.J./Ocean Township) leads the Warriors with 33 points (12 G, 9 A) this season. Twenty of those points have come in the last three games, as she recorded two goals each in wins over Seton Hill and Molloy before recording a career-high four strikes last Saturday at Mansfield. Shapiro also added a career-best three assists vs. Molloy, as she was recognized as the PSAC Athlete of the Week on Tuesday and the NFHCA DII Offensive Athlete of the Week the following afternoon. She has 23 goals and 15 assists across 62 collegiate games at ESU; five of her 12 goals this season have been game-winners.
Veenstra (Alkmaar, The Netherlands/Cios Haarlem) remains tied for fourth on the team with seven goals despite missing the past four games due to injury. She scored in four-consecutive games from Sept. 29 – Oct. 9, including the game-winner in a 3-0 triumph over Shippensburg to open the PSAC schedule. Veenstra added two goals in a 3-2 comeback win over Kutztown on Oct. 17, scoring a memorable go-ahead strike in a solo run from midfield with 1:27 left in regulation.
Spangler (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) has thrived while moving into a starting role on the backline for the first time. She has totaled three goals and an assist on the offensive end, tallying the first goal in a 3-0 win at Bloomsburg on Oct. 9. Defensively, she has contributed to a backline which has allowed just 13 goals and 60 shots on goal across 18 regular season games. Spangler is one of nine Warriors to start all 18 of those contests.
ESU (15-3, 9-1) will begin postseason play at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, taking on Shippensburg (15-3, 8-2) in a PSAC semifinal matchup at West Chester. The winner will face either the host Golden Rams (15-2, 9-1) or Millersville (14-5, 7-3) in the conference championship game at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
West Chester, ESU and Shippensburg are ranked No. 1 through No. 3, respectively, in the latest DII Atlantic Regional rankings which were released on Wednesday. Millersville is also included at No. 5, with the top three teams after the weekend to receive a berth in this year's DII national tournament. The selection show will be streamed live on NCAA.com at 3 p.m. on Monday.
Shippensburg enters Friday's PSAC semifinal on an eight-game winning streak. Outside of two losses to ESU by a combined 7-0 margin, the Raiders have outscored all other opponents 66-18 this season. They are led by 2018 PSAC Athlete of the Year Jazmin Petrantonio, who leads all PSAC performers with 45 points (20 G, 5 A) this fall.
Other key contributors for the Warriors this season include junior GK
Maddie Richie (15-3, 0.74 GAA, .759 save pct., 10 SO), junior
Karly Conway (8 G, 4 A), senior
Makenna Marhefka (5 G, 3 A), junior
Grace Martini (3 G, 2 A), senior
Karisa Turner (18 GS, 1 G), junior
Briana Sassaman (18 GS) and junior
Kristen English (18 GS, 3 A).
Richie leads the PSAC and ranks second nationally in goals-against average. Conway joins Shapiro as the only two Warriors to score three-plus goals in a game this season, as she recorded a hat trick in a 4-0 win over Slippery Rock on Oct. 13.
Friday will be the eighth postseason meeting between ESU and Shippensburg, with the Warriors looking to avenge 2-1 defeats in each of the last two DII national tournaments.
