WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Jazmin Petrantonio scored with no time remaining in the opening half, and she added a key insurance strike with 7:23 left in regulation to lift Shippensburg to a 3-0 victory over East Stroudsburg University in Friday's second PSAC semifinal at West Chester.
The Raiders (16-3) advance to play the host Golden Rams in the conference championship game on Sunday, while the Warriors (15-4) will look to receive an at-large bid to this year's NCAA Division II tournament. The selection show will be streamed live on NCAA.com at 3 p.m. Monday afternoon.
"We had plenty of opportunities to score, but things just didn't bounce our way today," head coach
Sandy Miller said. "We're still hoping to receive a bid to NCAA's, and most of the recent teams to win an NCAA title didn't win a conference championship. We plan to keep pushing ahead, get ready for practice on Sunday and move forward from there."
ESU controlled play for large stretches of the afternoon, ending the contest with a 21-12 advantage in shots and an 8-5 edge in corners. The Warriors had four quality scoring chances in the final 15 minutes of the first half alone, but two shots were sent wide and other efforts by seniors
Kelli Shapiro and
Bailey Quinn were stopped by Raider goalkeeper Ally Mooney.
Shippensburg, though, earned a contested penalty corner right before the intermission. Valen Alonso sent the corner to Sarah Womer, who left the ball for Petrantonio to fire into the back of the cage for her 21st strike of the season.
The goal was the first all year for the Raiders against ESU, as the Warriors had won the two regular season meetings by a combined margin of 7-0.
ESU continued to increase its pressure in the second half, earning eight penalty corners and out-shooting Shippensburg 11-2 during a 17 minute stretch midway through the frame. The run ended, however, with another goal by Petrantonio against the run of play. The 2018 PSAC Athlete of the Year made an individual run into the circle and blasted a low shot into the left corner to double the Raider lead.
Adrienne McGarrigle rounded out the scoring for Shippensburg with just over five minutes remaining. Mooney finished with nine saves in goal to secure the shutout.
Quinn, freshman
Celeste Veenstra, senior
Ashley Ceschini and junior
Emily Spangler each finished with four shots to lead the Warrior offensive effort, with three of Veenstra's four shots directed on goal.
ESU would still appear to be in solid position for an at-large bid, as the Warriors entered the weekend ranked second out of five teams in the latest DII Atlantic Region rankings. Three teams from both the East and Atlantic regions advance to the national stage, with opening round tournament games set for Sunday, Nov. 25.
