ESU Women’s Basketball Drops 84-57 Decision at No. 13 Cal U.

CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team saw its two-game winning streak come to an end on Wednesday in a PSAC crossover matchup, as nationally ranked No. 13 California University (Pa.) recorded an 84-57 victory inside the Convocation Center.
 
ESU (5-6, 2-3 PSAC) held an early 7-5 lead in the contest but would see the Vulcans end the opening quarter on an 8-2 run. Cal U (10-0, 4-0 PSAC) forced the Warriors into a season-high 22 turnovers and tallied 31 points in the process.
 
Senior Noelle Powell paced the Warriors in the contest with a season-high 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field. Powell also connected on a pair of shots from 3-point range. Junior Dominique Rayam finished the contest 4-for-4 from the field and 4-for-4 at the free-throw line as she tallied a career-high 12 points for ESU. Rayam also tied a season-best with six boards, while junior Tiffany Lapotsky added 10 points, six boards, and two assists.
 
Seairra Barrett, who entered the contest leading the PSAC in scoring, went 11-of-20 from the field and 6-for-6 at the free-throw line to finish with a game-high 28 points for the Vulcans. Barrett added a game-high eight rebounds to go along with two steals and one assist. Gina Vallecorsa tallied 12 points, while Abbey Sporio (11 pts) and Shauna Harrison (10 pts) rounded out the double-digit scorers for Cal U. in the contest.
 
ESU would take its first lead of the contest at the 7:37 mark of the opening quarter as Lapotsky hit a jumper in the paint to make it 4-3. Trailing by one, Pike answered with her lone 3-ball of the contest to put the Warriors on top 7-5. Vallecorsa hit a three of her own with 4:52 remaining to put the Vulcans up 8-7.
 
The Warriors worked to cut the deficit down to a single point twice with less than three minutes remaining, only to see the Vulcans go on an 8-2 run to take a 20-13 lead heading into the second quarter.
 
Lapotsky and junior Jordan Hertz sparked a 6-0 run in the fourth quarter for ESU as Hertz finished a layup in the paint with 4:30 remaining before Lapotsky followed with a layup off the fast break. Hertz capped the run with a jumper in the paint off a steal from steal from Lapotsky with 3:16 remaining in the contest.
 
ESU closed the contest on a 7-0 run over the final 1:06 of play. Powell connected on her second trey of the contest with 34 ticks left on the clock before sophomore Marlene Bassett finished a layup off a Cal U. turnover with one second remaining.
 
The Warriors will return to action on December 30 with a 1 p.m. matchup against Mansfield in the teams' PSAC East opener. ESU returns to Koehler Fieldhouse on January 9 for a 6 p.m. matchup against Lock Haven.
