CHEYNEY, Pa. – Senior guard
Imani Brown totaled 19 points and 10 rebounds, and sophomore guard
Jordan Hertz dished out a career-high 11 assists to help East Stroudsburg University overcome a slow start to top Cheyney by a 58-47 final on Monday.
The Warriors (16-6, 14-4 PSAC) outscored the Wolves (5-19, 3-15 PSAC) by a 48-25 margin after trailing 22-10 at the end of the first quarter. ESU set a new season high with its fifth victory in a row, and it extended its winning streak over Cheyney to 14 games.
Brown's double-double was her fifth of the season and ninth overall in her ESU career. Hertz's assist total, meanwhile, is tied for the most by an ESU player in the past 18 years, matching Tyeca Reviere's 11 assists from a Jan. 6, 2016 contest at Slippery Rock.
TaKayla Ellis had a game-high 24 points for Cheyney. Sixteen of those points came in the first quarter, as she hit 6 of 7 field goal attempts (3-4 3FG) to help the home side open up an early double-digit advantage.
After falling behind by as many as 14 points in the second quarter, the Warriors began to assert themselves defensively. Trailing 27-17 with 6:55 left in the opening half, ESU closed out the quarter on a 7-2 run to pull within five points at the break.
A jumper by sophomore guard
Tiffany Lapotsky gave ESU its first lead since the opening minutes at 37-35 with 4:07 left in the third quarter. A late 3-pointer by junior guard
Ann McKnight moved the margin up to 42-37 heading into the final quarter.
The Wolves sank the first basket of the fourth, but they were then held off the scoreboard for nearly seven minutes. ESU used a 7-0 run during that stretch, capped by a pair of McKnight free throws, to grab a double-digit lead at 49-39. The Warriors led by as many as 12 points in the closing minutes.
Hertz assisted on 11 of ESU's 20 field goals. She has handed out 19 assists in the past two games, and now ranks second in the PSAC with 4.4 assists per game on the year. Hertz also grabbed eight rebounds while playing all 40 minutes in the win.
In addition to her double-double, Brown totaled a team-high four steals for ESU. She hit 6 of 18 field goal attempts and 4 of 10 shots from 3-point range. Brown now has 1,129 points for her collegiate career, and she moved past Lori Gruver (1979-83) for the No. 12 spot in ESU's all-time scoring rankings.
Tonight's victory moves the Warriors back within a game and a half of West Chester (19-4, 16-3 PSAC) for first place in the PSAC East standings. The two teams will face off at Koehler Fieldhouse at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Before that, however, ESU has a Wednesday night road contest against a Bloomsburg team which has won each of its last four games. That streak has moved the Huskies (10-15, 7-12 PSAC) into fifth place in the East standings. Opening tip on Wednesday is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
