MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Senior
Mary Wallick delivered a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift East Stroudsburg University to a 2-1 victory over LeMoyne in the second of two games in Myrtle Beach on Saturday.
The Warriors (1-3) split their two contests on the afternoon after being edged 1-0 by Southern New Hampshire in the opener. Junior RHP
Angelica Dark continued her strong start to the season in the circle, allowing one earned run across 11 innings of work in the two games combined.
Dark entered in relief of sophomore RHP
Erica Molinaro in the third inning against LeMoyne, with a runner on second base with two outs. That runner would ultimately score on a Warrior error to give the Dolphins an early 1-0 lead.
ESU leveled up the score in the bottom of the fifth. After Wallick led off with a double, LeMoyne turned to its No. 1 pitcher, Alexis Eastman (20-9, 2.37 ERA in 2017). Wallick advanced to third on a groundout, and she crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by junior
Madison Vicendese.
Dark stranded runners in scoring position in both the sixth and seventh innings to give the Warriors a chance to walk off. Sophomore
Kaylee Hazewski singled to lead off the seventh, and she immediately advanced to third on a single by freshman
Marissa Govan. That brought Wallick to the plate, and she ended the contest with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Wallick has delivered the last two walk-off wins for the Warriors, as she had ESU's lone walk-off last season with a game-winning double against Georgian Court on April 9.
Hazewski, Govan, and sophomore
Rachel Grabowski each had two hits against LeMoyne, which went 29-17 a year ago and was off to a 3-0 start this season. Dark (1-2) allowed three hits and struck out one over 4 2/3 innings.
Pitching also dominated the first game of the day between ESU and Southern New Hampshire (3-0), with the two teams combining for a total of eight hits. SNHU starter Maddy Barone retired the Warriors in order in each of the first three innings. ESU's best chance to score came in the fourth after one-out singles by Govan and Wallick. A Vicendese walk would then load the bases with two outs, but Barone induced a fly out to work out of trouble.
Dark was strong once again, keeping the Penmen off the scoreboard for the first six innings. The game ended on a walk-off home run by Gabriella Vachon with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Dark's final line was one earned run on five hits over 6 1/3 innings, with one strikeout and one walk.
Wallick had two of ESU's three hits against SNHU; she ended the day 3 for 6 with an RBI across both games.
The Warriors conclude their three-day tournament in Myrtle Beach on Sunday, with matchups against Merrimack (10 a.m.) and Wilmington (12 p.m.).
Note:
Freshmen
MacKenzie Lewis and
Kamron Phillips had their first collegiate hits against LeMoyne, and Hazewski and freshman
Sofia Cecchin added stolen bases in the 2-1 victory.
