CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Dominic Walton broke an East Stroudsburg University freshman record in the shot put which had stood since 1975 and reached the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark in the outdoor season opener, leading the Warriors at the UNC Charlotte 49er Classic on Friday and Saturday.

Walton had a mark of 53-1 1/2 to surpass the previous freshman record of Paul Ferency, a three-time All-American, set 43 years ago.

The mark stands No. 2 on the Warriors' all-time list behind Ferency's 59-2 1/4, set in 1978, which still stands as the PSAC record. Indoors, Walton ranks No. 4 on ESU's all-time list (51-9) and broke Glen Pinciotti's freshman record established in 1982. He placed sixth in the PSAC in the shot put three weeks ago.

Walton also had ESU's No. 9 all-time mark in the discus (151-0) to lead 30 PSAC qualifying performances, 15 by the men and 15 by the women.

Junior Marissa Flim, coming off a PSAC runner-up performance in the 60m dash indoors, ran 12.19 in the 100m dash to rank tied for fourth in school history.

ESU's top two standouts indoors, junior Aspen Gaita (All-America and school record in women's pentathlon, national qualifier in 60m hurdles) and senior Christian Castro (PSAC men's 60m hurdles champ, 3rd in 200m, 5th in 60m), did not compete as they prepare for the outdoor season.

Fifteen different women had ESU's 15 PSAC qualifying performances, paced by Flim, sophomore Tiana Webster (12.32) and sophomore Morgan Dey (12.51) in the 100m dash.

Senior Kaylyn West, PSAC runner-up in the 800m indoors, ran 11:10.53 in the 3000m steeplechase, nearly reaching last year's season best and about six seconds from her NCAA provisional time in 2016.

Senior Samantha Young ran 18:18.07 in the 5000m, and sophomore Sarah Klag qualified in 59.66 in the 400m.

ESU had two qualifiers in the 400m hurdles in junior Shante Dorin (1:07.33) and sophomore Allyson Stitzer (1:07.72). The Warriors also had two qualifiers in the 10,000m, as senior Jasmine Amro (38:57.13) and sophomore Jenna Vledder (39:30.82) were well under the PSAC standard of 40:00.00.

Junior Victoria Matthews cleared 5-2 1/4 in the high jump, junior Michayla Weitman went 17-6 1/4 in the long jump and sophomore Tatiana Williams reached 35-4 3/4 in the triple jump.

Junior Hannah Marth (125-5) and freshman Gabrielle D'Amore (123-2) had PSAC qualifiers in the javelin.

ESU had 11 men post 15 PSAC qualifying marks with Walton (shot put, discus), sophomore Noah Lockwood, junior Mike Matrisciano and sophomore Austin Horner both notching two.

Lockwood had marks of 138-8 in the discus and 46-4 3/4 in the shot put. Matrisciano ran PSAC times in the 110m hurdles (15.30) and 400m hurdles (57.21), and Horner had PSAC marks in the 110m hurdles (15.68) and long jump (23-0 3/4) after finishing second in the PSAC in the heptathlon and setting the Warriors' school record. He was also fourth in the conference in the long jump indoors.

Junior Khai Samuels, PSAC 800m runner-up indoors, opened his outdoor season with 4:04.41 in the 1500m, followed by sophomore Mike Sheptuk at 4:05.52.

Sophomore Darnell Randall, who was third in the PSAC long jump indoors, posted 6-6 3/4 in the high jump, just outside of ESU's all-time top 10.

Also hitting PSAC marks were senior Nathan Wojick in the 800m (1:55.26), junior Tom Ciaccio in the 3000m steeplechase (10:00.96), sophomore Andrew Schumacher in the 400m hurdles (55.67) and freshman Dan Amari in the pole vault (13-9 1/4).
