BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Returning to action for the first time in over two weeks due to weather-related postponements, East Stroudsburg University dropped a pair of tough one-run defeats at Bloomsburg on Monday. The Huskies took Game 1 by a 4-3 final, and they edged the Warriors 6-5 in the nightcap.
Freshman
Kaitlyn Caleen had two of ESU's five hits in the opener, while freshman
MacKenzie Lewis (3 for 4, SB) and senior
Heather Visco (1-3, HR, 2 RBI) led the offense in Game 2. Bloomsburg (8-9) won the PSAC championship in 2016, and the Huskies finished as the conference's runner-up last spring.
Homers by Maggie Hall and Tara Baney helped Bloomsburg to a 4-1 lead through the first three innings in Game 1. ESU's lone run during that span was an unearned run by Caleen in the second.
That score held into the seventh, as Baney limited the Warriors to three hits in the circle through the first six innings. ESU, though, attempted a comeback in the seventh, as singles by senior
Madison Oren and sophomore
Kaylee Hazewski, along with a walk by Lewis loaded the bases with one out. Two runs scored on a two-out fielding error in the infield, but Baney induced a lineout by junior
Madison Vicendese to hold on for the victory.
The Huskies again got off to a quick start in Game 2, holding leads of 4-0 after one and 6-1 after four innings.
The Warriors again rallied back, plating four in the top of the fifth to pull within a run. Hazewski and senior
Mary Wallick drove in the first two runs, and Visco capped off the inning with a two-run shot down the left field line. The homer was her second of the season and the 10th of her ESU career.
Freshman
Ashley Spencer started off the seventh with a leadoff pinch-hit double, and runners ended up on first and second with one out following an infield single by Lewis, but Bloomsburg pitcher Abby Wild induced a double play to halt the comeback attempt.
Freshman RHP
Mickayla Grow made a strong season debut in the circle for the Warriors, as she limited the Huskies to seven hits and two runs (one earned) over six innings of work in relief. Fellow freshman
Sofia Cecchin added two hits in Game 2, and she registered her seventh stolen base of the season in the opener.
ESU (6-12) is back on the road on Tuesday afternoon, traveling to Mansfield for a doubleheader beginning at 1:30 p.m.
Note:
Junior
Samantha Pickar made her season debut at shortstop in Game 2 after missing the beginning of the year due to injury. She went 0 for 1 and scored a run from the No. 9 position in the lineup.
