EAST STROUDSBURG – East Stroudsburg University began PSAC East play with an 8-1 defeat to West Chester at Wolbers Courts on Tuesday.
Junior
Lauren Morrissey picked up the Warriors' first point over the Golden Rams since 2014 with a victory at No. 6 singles to conclude the afternoon. She has now won three-straight matches this spring, and she moved her overall dual record in 2017-18 to 5-1.
West Chester (3-7, 1-0 PSAC) has topped the PSAC East regular season standings in each of the past three seasons, going 17-0 against East opponents during that span.
Each of the top three singles matches were competitive to the end. Sophomore
Marina Zardet was edged 6-4, 6-4 by 2016-17 first team All-PSAC East performer Rylee Power at the No. 1 spot. Senior
Devin Presby held a 5-4 lead over Leandra Roelker at No. 2 in the second set before Roelker rallied to clinch a 6-0, 7-5 victory, and sophomore
Aubrianna Stetina dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision to Shannon Nixon at No. 3.
Freshmen
Amanda Jackson and
Quinn McCluskey came closest to earning a win in doubles, as they had a late lead at No. 3 before ultimately falling 8-6 to Julia Mowrey and Sofia Von der Heyde.
The Warriors finished third in the PSAC East standings last year, earning their first postseason appearance since 2010-11.
ESU (2-7, 0-1 PSAC) remains at home for their next dual, as they host Holy Family in a non-conference tilt at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
