WILMINGTON, Del. – Junior
Madison Vicendese had five hits, including her first home run of the season, while junior RHP
Angelica Dark and freshman RHP
Mickayla Grow had strong performances in the circle to propel East Stroudsburg University to a doubleheader sweep at Goldey-Beacom on Tuesday.
Dark pitched a two-hit shutout in a 4-0 win for the Warriors in the opener. Vicendese and senior
Madison Oren then had three hits apiece during an 11-6 victory in Game 2, with Grow allowing two runs over 6 1/3 innings in relief.
ESU (10-16) has now won three-straight overall dating back to a 3-0 win over Shippensburg to conclude last Thursday's PSAC East doubleheader. Goldey-Beacom (2-19) has lost four in a row.
Dark delivered a masterful performance in the opener. She retired the final 13 batters in the order, and the only Lightning hitter to reach base after the second inning was on a fielding error in the third. Dark registered her eighth complete game (first shutout) while picking up her fifth victory of the season.
The game remained scoreless through four innings before the Warriors broke through with a pair of runs in both the fifth and the sixth.
Three stolen bases and two bunts highlighted the offensive effort in the fifth. Freshman
Sofia Cecchin led off the frame with a walk. She quickly stole second, and she went on to score the game's first run after sophomore
Kaylee Hazewski reached on an error during her sacrifice attempt.
Hazewski made it over to third on a steal and a groundout, and she crossed the plate on an RBI bunt single by senior
Mary Wallick. Hazewski had three of ESU's seven stolen bases in Game 1. Cecchin added two, while Oren and Wallick had one each.
The first triple of the season for Vicendese got the offense going in the sixth. She scored on a misplayed fly ball which allowed Oren to reach second base. Oren promptly stole third, and she scored on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore
Rachel Grabowski.
Vicendese and Wallick each ended the contest with two hits apiece. The multi-hit game was Wallick's team-leading ninth of the season.
Goldey-Beacom held a 4-2 lead after the first inning of Game 2, with the Lightning grabbing their first advantage of the afternoon after ESU had jumped ahead on RBIs by Visco and freshman
Morgan Walsh.
Vicendese's long ball was a two-run shot in the third to tie up the score, and the Warriors plated seven runs over the final three innings to secure the twinbill sweep.
Oren had the go-ahead RBI double in the top of the fifth, and she led the offense with three RBIs overall in the win. Cecchin and Grabowski also drove in runs for ESU in the later innings.
Hazewski swiped two more bases in the nightcap to give her five across the two games. She now leads the PSAC in stolen bases after elevating her season total to 18 steals in 22 attempts. Visco, meanwhile, added two hits and two steals of her own in Game 2.
The only two runs allowed by Grow (2-0) came in the seventh inning. She allowed seven hits and struck out one, and she continues to lead ESU with a 2.45 ERA through 25 2/3 innings this season.
The Warriors are back at Zimbar Field on Friday afternoon, as they host Kutztown (11-14, 0-6) in a key PSAC East doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m.
Notes:
Wallick recorded her 150th hit last Thursday at Shippensburg. She is only the seventh Warrior in program history to reach 150 hits in her collegiate career.
ESU has 55 stolen bases as a team this season, a total which leads the PSAC and is over 10 above than the next-closest team.
