KUTZTOWN, Pa. – East Stroudsburg University junior
Aspen Gaita and sophomore
Austin Horner each registered big-time performances at Kutztown's two-day Mondschein Multi which concluded on Friday.
Gaita broke the ESU record in the heptathlon with a points total that currently ranks No. 2 in Division II this season, while Horner now ranks No. 2 all-time in program history in the decathlon after posting a score which is currently No. 15 nationally.
Gaita, competing in the heptathlon for the first time as a Warrior, scored 4,991 points across the seven contested events. That ranked her nearly 300 points ahead of West Chester's Caroline Lewis (4,716) for first place among the 28 competing athletes in the competition, and it is 90 points above the previous school record of 4,901 which was established by Leslie Martin in 2007.
Gaita was above the PSAC qualifying standard in the 100-meter hurdles (14.10), high jump (5-3 1/4), 200m (25.25) and long jump (18-0 1/2). Her high jump and 200m marks were new PSAC qualifiers, and the 200m time is ranked No. 7 in ESU history.
The Stroudsburg native was not far off the conference qualifier of 2:23.00 in the 800m, as she crossed the line in a time of 2:25.73. She also competed in the shot put (31-4 1/2) and javelin (96-11).
Gaita now holds seven program records, three of which are outdoors (heptathlon, 100m hurdles, long jump). Only Angelo State's Kami Norton (5,208) has registered a higher score in the heptathlon this season in Division II.
Horner placed second out of a total of 33 competitors in the decathlon. His final score of 6,487 points is behind only Dan Johnson (6,898 points in 2012) for first place in the ESU record books. He reached the PSAC standard in the long jump (22-10), high jump (6-3 1/2) and 110m hurdles (15.40).
The high jump was a new conference qualifier, while the 110m hurdles time was a new season-best. Horner also just missed the PSAC standard in the 400m (50.82). Other events included the 100m dash (11.55), shot put (29-9 1/4), pole vault (12-7 1/2), discus (92-4), javelin (145-11) and 1500m (4:38.65).
ESU had another standout performer in the heptathlon, as junior
Michayla Weitman registered a personal best score of 4,421 which is No. 6 in program history and was only 54 points off the DII provisional standard of 4,475 points.
Weitman placed fourth out of the 28 competing student-athletes. She recorded outdoor personal-best marks in five of the seven contested events, including the 100m hurdles (15.99), high jump (4-11 3/4), shot put (30-8 1/4), 200m (26.55), and javelin (111-7). She completed the 800m in 2:33.55 and had a top effort of 17-2 in the long jump.
ESU's other track & field athletes are competing in two additional meets this weekend. Moravian's Coach P Classic wraps up on Saturday, while Bucknell's Bison Outdoor Classic begins Saturday and concludes on Sunday.
