BETHLEHEM, Pa. – East Stroudsburg University senior
Christian Castro recorded an NCAA Division II provisional time in the 110-meter hurdles in his outdoor season debut, and he was one of 11 Warriors to move up in the program's all-time top 10 lists at Moravian's Coach P Invitational.
ESU had 10 new PSAC qualifying times at the two-day meet which concluded on Saturday, and an additional eight Warriors had season bests that bettered their previous conference qualifiers.
Castro crossed the line in 14.51 in his preliminary round heat in the hurdles, a mark which ranks No. 3 in program history and which was 0.05 under the DII provisional standard of 14.56. The 2018 Indoor PSAC champion in the 100m hurdles would then place second in Saturday's final with a time of 14.76. He also competed in the 200m, finishing third out of 61 runners with a PSAC qualifying time of 21.75 that ranks No. 7 all-time at ESU.
Castro was one of four ESU men to move up in the program's individual top 10 rankings. Senior
Nathan Wojick placed second in a field of 72 runners in the 800m with a new season-best time of 1:53.47. That mark is No. 4 in team history. Wojick was followed by junior
Khai Samuels, who posted a new PSAC qualifying time of 1:55.43.
Freshman
Dominic Walton continued his strong season in the throws, as his top effort of 154-5 in the discus was a new season-best which is No. 7 in ESU's record books. Sophomore
Darnell Randall came through with a major PR in the long jump, as his distance of 23-8 ranks eighth in program history. Other ESU men in the field who were above the conference standard included sophomore Randall in the high jump (6-2 3/4) and freshman
Dan Amari in the pole vault (13-11 3/4).
Junior
Pat Monahan became the Warriors' first PSAC qualifier in the 100m this season, as his preliminary time of 11.12 was just under the conference standard of 11.15. He would ultimately place seventh in the finals later in the afternoon (11.26). ESU also had three runners place in the top 10 in the 400m hurdles, as senior
Ronald D'Eliseo (53.45) was fourth, sophomore
Andrew Schumacher (55.73) was fifth and junior
Mike Matrisciano (56.05) had a season-best time which placed him seventh. D'Eliseo's time was a new season-best, and it was under the NCAA DII provisional standard of 53.55.
The Warrior men added a final top 10 program time in the 4x100m relay, as Monahan, Castro, D'Eliseo, and Schumacher combined to complete the event in 41.91. That placed them second on Saturday, and it is the 10th fastest mark in team history. In the 4x400m, freshman
Omari Slocombe, Wojick, Samuels and Schumacher took third with a time of 3:22.48.
Sophomore
Me'Saj Closs is in the midst of another standout season in the throws for the Warrior women, and she had two more strong performances over the weekend. Closs registered a PR throw of 130-3 in the discus which is No. 3 in program history, and she added a new PSAC-qualifying toss of 38-4 in the shot put.
Sophomore
Alexis Schuldes recorded a 143-11 in the hammer, with that toss ranked No. 10 in program history, and she posted a new conference qualifier in the discus (121-9). Both Closs (3rd) and Schuldes (9th) placed in the top 10 in a field of 49 discus throwers.
Sophomore
Barbara Grossov had the final new PSAC qualifier in the throws, as she booked her spot in the shot put with a top heave of 37-10 1/2. The Warriors stood out in the javelin as well; junior
Hannah Marth registered a PR of 132-5 which is No. 7 in team history. That placed her sixth out of 47 competitors, two spots ahead of freshman teammate
Gabrielle D'Amore (131-4).
Sophomore
Tatiana Williams was the top performer in the jumps, recording a season-best performance of 36-2 3/4 in the triple jump which is No. 8 in program history.
Standouts on the track included sophomores
Morgan Dey,
Sarah Klag and
Allyson Stitzer. Dey (25.89) is a new PSAC qualifier in the 200m, Klag (59.02) recorded a season-best in the 400m and Stitzer (1:04.90) took nearly three seconds off her previous season-best in the 400m hurdles.
Junior
Marissa Flim, sophomore
Tiana Webster, Dey and freshman
Nyle Hill added a time of 47.96 in the 4x100m which ranked second on Saturday and is No. 6 all-time at ESU. In the 4x400m, junior
Sabrina Phillippe, Klag, Stitzer and junior
Shante Dorin placed third with a season-best time of 4:00.06.
Flim and Webster also had strong performances in the 200m, but their official times were not yet available due to technical difficulties at the scorer's table (
UPDATE: Flim (25.45) and Webster (25.53) finished in fourth and fifth place, respectively, with new PSAC qualifying times).
The Warriors have one more meet to finish up this weekend, as Bucknell's Bison Outdoor Classic concludes on Sunday morning.
