KUTZTOWN, Pa. – With a sweep of the three doubles matches setting the tone, East Stroudsburg University completed a 7-2 victory over Kutztown on Saturday to book its spot in the PSAC tournament for a second-consecutive season.
The Warriors (6-8, 3-2 PSAC) earn the No. 3 seed in the East standings. They will travel to play at second-seeded West Chester on Tuesday afternoon. The Golden Bears (2-12, 1-4 PSAC) dropped their fifth dual in a row.
All three doubles matches were closely contested. Sophomores
Marina Zardet and
Aubrianna Stetina and seniors
Elizabeth Bartoli and
Devin Presby each sealed 9-7 victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, while freshmen
Amanda Jackson and
Quinn McCluskey triumphed by an 8-4 final at No. 3.
Bartoli/Presby and Jackson/McCluskey have each won seven of their past 10 dual doubles matches.
With those points, the Warriors needed to win only two of the six singles tilts to seal their playoff spot, and they would ultimately come away with four straight-set victories. McCluskey provided the match clincher with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the No. 4 spot. Other wins were recorded by Presby at No. 2 (6-3, 6-4), Bartoli at No. 5 (6-3, 6-3) and junior
Lauren Morrissey at No. 6 (6-1, 6-0).
Bartoli earned her 25th collegiate singles victory, and she is a team-best 7-3 over her past 10 matchups. Morrissey improved her singles dual record to 8-3 on the year (8-5 overall).
The Warriors will now participate in their second straight PSAC tournament after not having qualified since 2011 prior to last spring. The program's lone PSAC title came during the 1979-80 season.
With today's win, ESU is now 6-4 during the spring portion of its schedule. Regardless of Tuesday's quarterfinal result, the Warriors will have one more regular season contest to conclude their season on April 26, as they travel to Muhlenberg for a 4 p.m. dual.
