EAST STROUDSBURG – East Stroudsburg University returns to the PSAC women's tennis tournament for a second-consecutive season on Tuesday, as the Warriors travel to West Chester for a quarterfinal matchup beginning at 3:30 p.m.
ESU (6-8, 3-2) secured the PSAC East's No. 3 seed with a 7-2 victory at Kutztown on Saturday. The Warriors have won four of their last five matches, and they are 6-4 overall during the spring portion of their schedule.
West Chester (9-9, 4-1) has placed in the top two in the East standings in each of the past six seasons. Bloomsburg handed the Golden Rams their first divisional setback since 2014 with a 5-4 triumph back on March 31.
ESU fell 8-1 at home to West Chester during the team's regular season dual on March 27, with junior
Lauren Morrissey earning the lone point for the Warriors at No. 6 singles. Morrissey takes a team-best 8-3 dual record into Tuesday's quarterfinal.
Sophomore
Marina Zardet has been a mainstay at the top of the ESU singles lineup all season. Zardet, who was honored as a second team All-PSAC East selection last spring, is 7-7 in dual contests on the year.
Senior
Devin Presby and sophomore
Aubrianna Stetina have followed as the team's primary No. 2 and No. 3 singles players, with the duo combining for four PSAC East victories this spring. Included among those four wins was Stetina's clutch 7-5, 7-6 (7-2) triumph at Millersville which clinched a 5-4 team victory and moved the Warriors ahead of the Marauders in the conference standings.
Freshman
Quinn McCluskey, senior
Elizabeth Bartoli and Morrissey each went 3-2 in PSAC East matches at the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions during the regular season. McCluskey also teamed with freshman
Amanda Jackson throughout the year, with the pair currently holding an overall record of 11-4.
Bartoli and Presby are currently 7-5 in dual matches at No. 2 doubles (9-6 overall), while Zardet and Stetina have supplied two PSAC East wins as ESU's No. 1 doubles tandem.
The Warriors are making their fourth PSAC tournament appearance since 2009 under head coach
Al McCormick. They are looking to snap a nine-match losing streak to the Golden Rams; ESU's last win in the series was a 5-4 triumph in 2010.
That victory was part of a 14-9 season in which the team earned its first-ever NCAA tournament appearance. The program's lone PSAC championship came back in 1979-80.
The winner of Tuesday's quarterfinal advances to play IUP, which earned the top seed in the PSAC West standings. The semifinals (Friday) and final (Saturday) will be hosted by Bloomsburg over the weekend.
