EAST STROUDSBURG – Senior
Mary Wallick tied the program record for doubles, and sophomore
Rachel Grabowski delivered her first home run of the season, but it was not enough for East Stroudsburg University in a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Mansfield on Tuesday.
The Mountaineers (10-13) won 6-1 in the opener and 8-6 in the nightcap over the Warriors (11-25).
Wallick's milestone two-bagger capped a four-run sixth inning for ESU in Game 2, as the visitors attempted to rally from an 8-2 deficit. She now has 40 doubles in her collegiate career, a total that is tied with Ashley Miller (2003-06) for the No. 1 spot in team history.
Junior
Samantha Pickar added an RBI triple, while Grabowski and sophomore
Kaylee Hazewski also drove in runs during the sixth for the Warriors. The comeback, though, stalled after Wallick's double, and ESU was limited to a two-out single by senior
Madison Oren in the seventh, as Connor Decker closed out the win in the circle for Mansfield.
The Warriors took an early 2-0 lead in Game 2 on RBI singles by senior
Heather Visco and freshman
Kaitlyn Caleen, but Mansfield responded with four-run outputs in the third and fourth innings to take control of the contest.
Oren (3 for 4) had three hits for a second time in the past three games, raising her season average to .295. She also had one of ESU's six steals in the night cap. Wallick had two steals, while Visco, Caleen and freshman Mackenzie Lewis each had one. Wallick and Visco are currently tied for fifth on ESU's all-time list with 33 stolen bases in their Warrior careers.
Hazewski, Wallick and Visco all went 2 for 4 from the top three positions in the batting order, with Hazewski scoring a pair of runs. Joelle Snyder and Koryn Wickwire had three RBIs apiece for Mansfield.
The home side quickly jumped in front with five runs in the opening inning of Game 1. Rachael Sterner and Taylor Chidester each went 3 for 3 for the Mountaineers; Chidester supplied a home run and three RBIs in the win.
Grabowski's homer was a solo shot with two outs in the second inning. Both Grabowski and Caleen went 2 for 3 in the opener, accounting for four of ESU's five hits in the contest. Sophomore RHP
Erica Molinaro delivered 3 1/3 scoreless relief innings in the circle, surrendering only two hits and a walk during that span.
The Warriors were scheduled to return to action Wednesday afternoon for a home doubleheader against Bloomfield. That twinbill, though, has been cancelled due to expected rainy conditions. ESU will now be back on the field Friday at Kutztown, with Game 1 of an afternoon doubleheader set to begin at 2:30 p.m.
