KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Senior
Mary Wallick set a new program record for doubles, coming up with a pair of two-baggers in Game 1 of East Stroudsburg University's road doubleheader at Kutztown on Thursday afternoon.
Both doubles drove in runs, helping the Warriors to a 4-1 victory in the opener. The Golden Bears recovered for a 10-5 win in Game 2.
Wallick's milestone double, the 41st of her career, came with two outs in the third inning to open up the scoring. Senior
Heather Visco followed with a run-scoring single to center field to double the lead. The seniors teamed up for two more RBI hits in the seventh, as another Wallick double and Visco single gave ESU some key insurance runs.
Four runs would turn out to be plenty of offense for junior RHP
Angelica Dark, who limited the home side to one run on five hits over seven innings of work. Dark did not allow a hit until Bridget Newman broke the shutout with a two-out solo home run in the fourth. She needed only 75 pitches to register her 10th complete game of the season.
Trailing 2-1 at the time, Kutztown loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth, but Dark induced a fielder's choice out of No. 5 hitter Alyssa Donato to maintain ESU's advantage.
Wallick, Visco and freshman
Ashley Spencer each went 2 for 4 at the plate for the Warriors, with Visco adding her sixth stolen base of the season in the seventh.
Visco had another strong offensive performance in Game 2, finishing 1 for 3 with a walk, stolen base and her third homer of the season. The long ball was the 11th of her career, moving her into a tie for sixth in team history, and the two steals on the afternoon vaulted her ahead of Wallick for fourth all-time with 35 for her career.
Kutztown, though, scored in four of their first five trips to the plate, with a five-run bottom of the third accounting for half of the damage. Alyssa Oakley and Jenna Lipowski each had three hits to lead the offensive attack for the Golden Bears (15-22, 3-13 PSAC).
A two-run double by junior
Madison Vicendese highlighted a three-run top of the third for the Warriors. Freshman
Kaitlyn Caleen and sophomore
Rachel Grabowski also had run-scoring hits for the visitors, while sophomore
Kaylee Hazewski picked up her team-leading 21st stolen base of the season. Her 46 career steals are tied with Kristin Kametz (1993-96) for the second most in program history.
ESU (12-26, 4-10 PSAC) remains in contention for the third and final PSAC East playoff spot for at least one more day with this afternoon's split. The Warriors will need to sweep Shippensburg (19-15, 6-6 PSAC) on Saturday and have Shippensburg get swept by Millersville on Friday to move past the Raiders into third place (
UPDATE: two Shippensburg wins over Millersville on Friday eliminated ESU from postseason contention).
Saturday's doubleheader at Zimbar Field, which begins at 1 p.m., will also be Senior Day for Visco, Wallick and
Madison Oren. They will be recognized for their contributions to the program in a ceremony between games.
