BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Sophomore
Me'Saj Closs broke an 11-year old school record in the discus, and four Warriors added new conference-qualifying marks in the final meet for East Stroudsburg University prior to next weekend's PSAC Outdoor Championships.
Closs registered a top throw of 135-11 at Saturday's Lehigh Games, bettering Amanda Sines' old ESU record of 133-3 which was set back in 2007. She has been steadily approaching the record throughout the spring season, posting personal bests each week since debuting with a 127-6 at West Chester's Quad Meet on March 31.
Saturday's effort placed her fourth out of 27 competitors in a Division I-filled field. Closs also moved up to No. 7 in the ESU record books in the hammer with a PR toss of 153-8.
Three of the Warriors' new PSAC qualifiers came in women's field events. Sophomore
Sam Giangrasso booked her spot in the hammer with a PR throw of 141-4. That earned her a 13th place result on Saturday, one spot back of sophomore
Alexis Schuldes (142-5) in 12th and six back of Closs in seventh.
ESU had three of the top six finishers in the javelin. Junior
Hannah Marth (126-0) and freshman
Gabrielle D'Amore (124-11) took second and third place, respectively, while freshman Caitlin Blake recorded a new PSAC-qualifying distance of 118-11 in sixth place. Blake breaks through after having twice come within two feet of the conference standard of 117-11 1/2 earlier this season.
Junior
Victoria Collins rounded out the new ESU women's qualifiers, finishing tied for third in the high jump with a top clearance of 5-2 1/4.
Two Warrior women added season bests above the conference standard. Sophomore
Barbara Grossov is now No. 6 all-time in program history in the shot put after registering a top throw of 40-2 3/4. She placed eighth on Saturday, one spot ahead of Closs (37-2 1/4).
On the track, sophomore
Sarah Klag lowered her season best in the 400m, placing fifth out of 28 runners with a time of 58.96.
Fresh off of competing in the 124th annual Penn Relays on Thursday and Friday, junior
Aspen Gaita topped a field of 30 runners in the 100m hurdles after crossing the line in 14.00. That NCAA DII provisional standard time is only one-hundredth of a second off her season best, which was established at West Chester in March. Sophomores
Allyson Stitzer (1:05.29) and
Tatiana Williams (36-4 1/4) were also just off their top marks in the 400m hurdles and triple jump, respectively.
Freshman
Teddy Mostellar was ESU's final new PSAC qualifier at Lehigh, as his time of 10:07.66 in the 3000m steeplechase was just under the conference standard of 10:10.00.
Strong efforts in the field for the Warrior men included freshman
Dominic Walton (149-8) in the discus, sophomore
Darnell Randall (22-4 1/4) in the long jump, freshman
Dan Amari (13-5 1/4) in the pole vault and freshman
DeAndre Scott (42-4 3/4) in the triple jump. Randall's distance was good enough for a tie for fourth place.
Additional top five performances were recorded by freshman
Nyle Hill (5th, 13.14) in the women's 100m, junior
Pat Monahan (3rd, 11.41) in the men's 100m and freshman
Omari Slocombe (4th, 22.98) in the men's 200m.
