SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Freshman RHP
Mickayla Grow delivered a shutout performance in the circle in Game 2, and fellow freshman
Morgan Walsh had RBIs in both games to lead East Stroudsburg University to a PSAC East doubleheader split at Shippensburg on Thursday.
The Warriors took the nightcap by a 3-0 final after falling 3-2 in Game 1. The games, originally scheduled to be played on Saturday, were moved up due to the potential for inclement weather over the weekend.
Grow, making her first collegiate start, tossed ESU's second shutout of the season. She allowed seven hits (all singles) and a walk while picking up one strikeout over her seven innings.
Shippensburg (14-8, 3-1 PSAC) loaded the bases on two singles and an error with two outs in the seventh, but No. 3 hitter Chloe Collins hit into a fielder's choice to seal the win.
The only other inning where Shippensburg had a runner reach second base came in the second. Grow allowed a hit and her lone walk to begin that frame, but she induced a lineout, a fielder's choice and a groundout to escape without any damage. Today's outing lowers Grow's season ERA to 2.53 over 19 1/3 innings.
Walsh opened the scoring for the Warriors with a solo homer in the fourth. The one-out long ball to left field was the first of her collegiate career.
ESU added runs in the fifth and sixth innings to pad its lead. Senior
Heather Visco delivered an RBI single in the fifth, and sophomore
Kaylee Hazewski came through with a two-out run scoring double in the sixth. Hazewski went 2 for 4 from the top of the lineup in Game 2, and she picked up her team-leading 13th stolen base in the opener.
All three of ESU's runs came off Collins, who entered the afternoon with a 1.59 ERA across 39 2/3 innings this season. Collins, though, had the decisive hit for Shippensburg in the opener, as she delivered a two-out RBI single in the fifth to break a 2-2 tie.
The Raiders grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first before ESU responded with two runs of its own in the following frame. Walsh drove in senior
Madison Oren with a bloop single down the right field line, and freshman
Sofia Cecchin swiped home as part of a double steal with freshman
MacKenzie Lewis.
ESU totaled three stolen bases across the doubleheader, and the Warriors continue to lead the PSAC with 44 steals as a team this season. Cecchin has been successful in all eight of her stolen base attempts on the year.
Shippensburg's Taryn Wilson retired the final 14 ESU batters to end the game. She struck out 10 while allowing four hits and a pair of walks over seven innings of work. ESU junior RHP
Angelica Dark took a tough defeat after surrendering 10 hits and failing to walk a batter over six innings. Dark struck out three and registered her seventh complete game of the season.
The Warriors (8-16, 2-4 PSAC) are scheduled to return to action next Tuesday, as they travel to Goldey-Beacom for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m.
