SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – East Stroudsburg University swept the three doubles matches and won four of its six singles victories in straight sets during a 9-0 shutout over Shippensburg on Friday afternoon.
The Warriors (4-7, 1-1) avenged a tight 5-4 defeat to the Raiders (1-13, 0-3) last spring to pick up their first PSAC East victory of the season. ESU has now won two duals in a row overall, both by 9-0 decisions.
The Warriors' usual doubles lineup of sophomores
Marina Zardet and
Aubrianna Stetina (8-1), seniors
Elizabeth Bartoli and
Devin Presby (8-4), and freshmen
Amanda Jackson and
Quinn McCluskey (8-2) secured victories at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 positions, respectively. Jackson and McCluskey are now 8-3 as a team on the year (6-3 in duals).
Bartoli (6-3, 6-0) and junior
Lauren Morrissey (6-0, 6-3) then each dropped only three games in their wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions. Other straight set wins were recorded by Presby at No. 2 (6-1, 7-6) and McCluskey at No. 4 (6-3, 6-4).
Zardet was potentially on her way to a two-set victory at the top singles spot, as she led 6-1, 1-0 before her opponent was forced to retire. Stetina completed the 9-0 clean sheet by outlasting Shippensburg's Daisy Rundio 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5) at the No. 3 position.
Morrissey improved to 7-1 in dual singles matches this season, and she has won five consecutive matches overall. Zardet is now 7-4 in singles during duals, while Bartoli is 5-2 during the spring portion of ESU's schedule (5-5 overall).
The Warriors return home on Sunday afternoon, hosting Bloomsburg at Stroudsburg HS in a PSAC East matchup beginning at 1 p.m.
