Day 1 Recap
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Standout performances by a pair of relay teams on Day 3 highlighted another top three overall finish for East Stroudsburg University's men's program at the PSAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
The 4x100m team won the conference title in the first contested event on the track, and the 4x800m relay squad added a school record later on Saturday afternoon, helping the Warriors earn a third place finish in the team standings with 84 points. ESU records its sixth consecutive top-three finish at the conference's outdoor meet.
Senior
Ronald D'Eliseo, senior
Christian Castro and freshman
Dominic Walton had individual top three efforts for ESU, which registered a total of 10 scoring performances on the final session of the three-day championships.
The afternoon began with a PSAC title-winning performance by junior
Pat Monahan, Castro, D'Eliseo and sophomore
Andrew Schumacher in the 4x100m. They completed the opening relay event in 41.61, beating out second-place Seton Hill by 0.09. The 4x100m title is the fifth in team history for the ESU men, with the most recent prior to this afternoon occurring in 2012. The final time ranks No. 7 in program history.
The Warriors end the weekend with PSAC championships in three events, as sophomores
Austin Horner (decathlon) and
Darnell Randall (long jump) claimed first place in their respective events on Friday.
ESU was only six-hundredths of a second away from both a fourth conference title and a new championship meet record, as freshman
Nick Fanelle, junior
Khai Samuels, sophomore
Mike Sheptuk and senior
Nathan Wojick completed the 4x800m in 7:39.18. That mark gives the Warriors a second new program record this weekend, as it was under the time of 7:41.19 which was established in 2013.
IUP edged the Warrior relay team on Saturday with a time of 7:39.12, with both teams well under the previous meet record of 7:41.44 from 2015. Shippensburg (7:50.03) was nearly 11 seconds back in third place.
D'Eliseo recorded the top individual performance on the afternoon, as he was the runner-up in the 400m hurdles with a season-best time of 52.92 that currently ranks No. 25 in all of Division II. D'Eliseo earns his highest ever individual finish at PSAC's out of eight career scoring performances. He was third in the 400m hurdles in both 2014 and 2015.
Schumacher added four points to ESU's team score in the 400m hurdles, as he placed fifth with a time of 55.04.
Castro earned his fourth top-five scoring performance of the year, crossing the line third in the 110m hurdles final with a time of 14.43. Castro was 0.01 back of Shippensburg's Austin Shupp in the runner-up position; he would later add a seventh-place showing in the 200m final with a time of 22.55.
Junior
Mike Matrisciano also competed in the 110m hurdles final, finishing in seventh place with a time of 15.29. Matrisciano has placed in the top eight in the event in each of the past two outdoor seasons.
Walton registered ESU's top performance in the field on Saturday. He placed third in the shot put with a PR toss of 54-3 3/4 which ranks second in program history and 28th in all of DII this season. Walton bettered his previous ESU freshman record of 53-1 1/2 which was set at Charlotte in mid-March.
Randall completed a stellar weekend in the jumps with a sixth place showing in the high jump. He managed a top clearance of 6-6 1/4.
The 4x400m relay wrapped up the meet, with ESU's team of Schumacher, freshman
Omari Slocombe, Wojick and Horner taking fourth with a time of 3:17.31. That mark was only three-hundredths back of the second-place finisher.
Shippensburg won its 10th consecutive men's championship with a final team total of 171 points. Host Slippery Rock was the runner-up with 143 points.
