EAST STROUDSBURG – Among the speed bumps for Gannon during its run to the NCAA Division II Final Four last fall was a 3-1 home loss to East Stroudsburg University at the end of October.
The Warriors did it to the Golden Knights again on Friday.
Redshirt sophomore
Trea-sure Ketter had seven kills, including clinching kills in both the first and third sets, as ESU stunned 14th-ranked Gannon by a 3-0 final in front of a packed crowd at Koehler Fieldhouse on Friday night.
Freshman
Kailyn Pyle (12 kills, .500 attack percentage) and junior
Sarah Smith (10 kills, .318%, 9 digs) were also key contributors for the Warriors (11-2, 1-0 PSAC), who handed the Golden Knights (11-1, 0-1 PSAC) their first defeat of the season. Set scores were 25-22, 29-27, 25-21.
"Our players just executed the game plan really well," head coach
Kevin Rodgers said. "We knew what their tendencies were, and we were able to expose them a little bit. Our block was phenomenal; we held them to their lowest hitting percentage of the year. This is a huge win for our program."
Senior
Tina Predojevic set the tone for the match early, firing in four aces during a 7-0 stretch for ESU after Gannon had won the opening point of the evening. Predojevic finished the contest with 38 assists, 12 digs, four blocks and those four aces.
The Golden Knights chipped away at the deficit, tying the score at 18-18 before an attack error began a 3-0 run that got the home side back on track. The lead was 24-22 when Ketter, who was just subbed in prior to the previous point, came up with a clutch kill to put the Warriors in front.
The second set was ESU's longest of the season thus far. Gannon had its lone set point at 27-26, but two Smith kills highlighted another 3-0 Warrior run which doubled their set advantage in the match.
Set 3 was once again tight throughout. ESU was ahead 22-20 when Ketter delivered a pair of kills, including the clincher, during a 3-1 run for the Warriors to conclude the night.
Ketter and Pyle each had identical .500 attack percentages in a dominant effort at the net. Pyle's 12 kills were a new season-high, and she also led ESU with five block assists.
"Kailyn and Trey are the two hardest workers on the team," Rodgers said. "For them to perform the way they did during our biggest game of the year so far is just a testament to how hard they have worked for their entire volleyball careers. It was great watching them do what I know they're capable of on a nightly basis."
Ashley McClung and Lauren Sampson had 11 kills apiece for Gannon, which was held to a .129 team attack percentage in the match.
Freshman
Emily Meredith notched a team-high 13 digs for the Warriors, while junior
Sam Dunphy supplied seven kills, seven digs and three blocks. ESU improves to 4-1 this season against teams which qualified for the DII national tournament last fall.
ESU now looks to keep the momentum going against Mercyhurst on Saturday, facing a team which has edged out five-set victories in each of the past two meetings in 2016 and 2017. The Lakers (6-8, 1-0 PSAC) earned a 3-0 win at Kutztown on Friday. Tomorrow afternoon's contest begins at 12 p.m. inside Koehler Fieldhouse.
