Warriors Top Slippery Rock in Four Sets, Earn Fourth-Straight PSAC Victory

Box Score

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Junior Sarah Smith had 15 kills and 10 digs, while freshman Andrea Coyle totaled 13 kills and 13 digs for East Stroudsburg University in a 3-1 victory at Slippery Rock on Saturday.

Set scores were 25-23, 27-25, 17-25, 25-20. With the win, the Warriors (14-2, 4-0) are one of only two teams without a PSAC loss through the first two weekends of conference play. They have sole possession of first place in the Southeast division standings after previously undefeated West Chester dropped a 3-1 decision at Gannon.

ESU rallied from late deficits in each of the first two sets. The visitors trailed 22-20 in the opening set, but a 5-1 stretch capped by a kill from senior Tina Predojevic completed the rally.

The Warriors then faced three set points down 24-21 in the second. A Smith kill, a Predojevic ace and a block by juniors Sam Dunphy and Jasmine Williams erased the deficit, and Coyle delivered a kill four points later to double ESU's set advantage.

After Slippery Rock (4-8, 1-3) recovered to claim the third set, the score was 10-10 in the fourth when a 7-1 Warrior run gave them a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way.

On a day where both teams had hitting percentages in the low teens, Dunphy registered nine kills with a .250 attack percentage to go along with 16 digs and six blocks for ESU. Freshman Emily Meredith added a season-best 24 digs from the libero position.

Smith now has six double-doubles in the Warriors' last seven matches, while Coyle recorded her second double-double of the year. Predojevic chipped in 44 assists, 10 digs and a pair of aces.

ESU continues its best start to a season since the 1996 team finished the year 32-2. The Warriors and Shippensburg are the only teams with 4-0 PSAC records; they are set to square off at 1 p.m. next Saturday at Koehler Fieldhouse.

Prior to that, though, ESU must host the defending PSAC champions, as Pitt-Johnstown arrives for a 7 p.m. contest next Friday.
