ESU Women’s Basketball Gives No. 1 IUP Hard-Fought Battle in 84-62 Setback at Home

EAST STROUDSBURG – Hosting a nationally-ranked No. 1 team for the second time in program history, the East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team dropped an 84-62 decision against Indiana University (PA) on Wednesday night in a PSAC crossover matchup.
 
ESU (8-8, 5-4 PSAC East) had a rough start to the contest as the Warriors went 8-of-26 from the field in the opening half of action. IUP (14-0, 9-0 PSAC West) would experience a modest start as the Crimson Hawks tallied 24 points in the first quarter to gain some early momentum on the road.
 
The Warriors would be paced by junior Jordan Hertz and her 14-point performance on the night. Hertz finished 6-of-10 from the field to go along with six rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Junior Tiffany Lapotsky tallied 13 points for the Warriors, while senior Noelle Powell added 11 points and a perfect 4-for-4 effort at the free-throw line.
 
Carolyn Appleby scored a game-high 25 points to pace the Crimson Hawks in the contest. Appleby finished 10-of-16 from the field to go along with a game-high six assists. Lauren Wolosik tallied 19 points for IUP and chipped in three assists and three steals. Brittany Robinson notched a double-double for the Crimson Hawks, finishing with 12 points and 10 boards.
 
The Warriors knotted the score early in the contest as Hertz hit a jumper in the paint to make it 2-2 at the 9:09 mark. IUP answered with an 8-0 run as Wolosik hit a 3-ball to give IUP a 10-2 advantage with 6:45 left in the opening quarter. IUP would close the quarter with a 9-0 run to give themselves a comfortable 22-6 lead over the Warriors.
 
Powell trimmed the ESU deficit to 38-22 with 1:20 left in the second quarter, only to see IUP close the half on a 5-0 run to take a 43-22 lead into the break. The Crimson Hawks shot 17-of-35 from the field in the half and went 4-of-6 at the charity stripe.
 
ESU outscored IUP in the fourth quarter and would rally to trim its deficit after the Crimson Hawks upped their advantage to 78-50 with 3:26 left to play. The Warriors started a 7-0 run following a jumper from Lapotsky with 3:16 remaining on the clock. Sophomore Amanda Pike capped the run for the Warriors by draining her first 3-ball of the night. Pike would hit a pair of treys in the quarter and finish the contest with six points.  
 
The Warriors return to action on Saturday with a PSAC East matchup on the road against Bloomsburg at 3 p.m. The Huskies (10-6, 6-3) lead the PSAC East and sit one game ahead of ESU in the standings.
