Woodbyrne’s Late Goal Lifts ESU Past Kutztown

EAST STROUDSBURG – Senior Jessica Woodbyrne scored in the 79th minute off a feed from Jules Sicker to lift the East Stroudsburg University women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over visiting Kutztown on Friday night at Eiler-Martin Stadium.

The victory pushed the Warriors to 9-3 overall and 8-3 in PSAC play on the year, as they collected their fifth win in the last six games.

ESU held a slight shot advantage, 17-15, over Kutztown in the match, led by a team-high five shots from Haley Skove and four from Danielle Cary.

Sophomore goalie Mauri Jackson had another outstanding night in net for the Warriors, stopping seven shots to record her ninth win of the season and her seventh shutout.

Kutztown had the first true scoring opportunity of the match, coming in the 11th minute of play. Off a corner kick, the ball bounced to Gabby Kane who fired a shot from around 10 yards out. Jackson was able to make a quick reaction and get her hand on it to keep the game scoreless.

The Warriors had a pair of chances in the ensuing five minutes on shots by Skove and Cary, but both attempts came up empty as the game remained knotted at 0-0.

ESU nearly came up with the game's first tally in the 27th minute, as Woodbyrne sent a thru ball to Cary, who fired a shot from inside the box. Netminder Jenna Bracken was able to get her fingertips on the shot and deflect it over the bar for a corner.

Midway through the second half with the game still deadlocked at 0-0, Kutztown's Emily Zwiercan fired a shot from a tough angle on the far right side that appeared as if it was ticketed for the back of the net. Jackson jumped and got her hand on it to knock it away from danger and record the big save.

As the clock dipped under the 12-minute mark, the Warriors worked the ball deep into the attacking zone. Sicker corralled a ball in the box and sent a quick pass to Woodbyrne who was stationed just outside the 18. Woodbyrne fired a low lefty shot that curled just inside the far post and beat Bracken for the go-ahead score, as the senior collected her third goal of the season.

Kutztown had two more shots in the remaining 11-plus minutes of play, including one on target from Zwiercan, but Jackson and the Warriors were able to hold off the Golden Bears to collect the 1-0 victory.

ESU continues its home stand this coming Monday, October 21 against Molloy at 7 p.m. from Eiler-Martin Stadium.
