Offense Explodes for Seven Goals as No. 22 ESU Cruises Past Mansfield

EAST STROUDSBURG – The 22nd-ranked East Stroudsburg University women's soccer team exploded for a season-high seven goals on Wednesday night as the Warriors cruised to a 7-0 victory over visiting Mansfield at Eiler-Martin Stadium.

ESU (10-4, 9-3 PSAC East) outshot Mansfield 36-8 in the match, including a 17-4 margin in shots on goal. The Warriors fired off 20 shots in the second half, as they tallied five of their seven goals in the final frame.

Melissa Herrera posted a game-high four points in the match on a goal and two assists, while Amy Strauser notched her first multi-point game of the season with one goal and an assist. Five other Warriors netted a goal apiece in the contest, including Alexa Cerda and Erin Guilfoyle, who tallied the first goals of their collegiate careers. Lynsy Gruwell collected her first career point with an assist on Strauser's goal.

Mauri Jackson, who played the opening 74-plus minutes, stopped two shots to record her 10th win of the season. Kelly Harmon played the final 15:08 in net and made two saves to finish out the shutout for ESU. The appearance for Harmon was her first as a Warrior.

ESU dominated the first half of play, outshooting Mansfield by a 16-3 margin in the opening stanza. The Warriors got a pair of highlight-reel goals as Corryn Gamber and Alessia Bianchini both found the back of the net from over 30 yards out.

Gamber put the Warriors on top with her fifth goal of the season in the 18th minute of play. The sophomore corralled a ball about 35 yards away from goal and rifled a shot that banged off the bottom of the crossbar straight down and narrowly crossed the line for the score, which gave ESU a 1-0 advantage.

ESU continued to apply pressure throughout the half and was rewarded with its second goal of the contest with just over two minutes remaining before the break. Herrera sent a quick pass back to Bianchini who was stationed about 30 yards out. Bianchini fired a long shot that beat goalkeeper Stephanie Moir over the top to double the ESU lead to 2-0. The score was the rookie's second of the season.

Early in the second half, Haley Skove sent a header towards net that was turned away by Moir. Brienn Seaman was in the right place to pick up the rebound, and finished into the open net for her second of the season, which padded the lead to 3-0.

In the 71st minute, Herrera showed off some fancy footwork at the top of box, as she made a quick move past a Mansfield defender and deposited one into the upper left corner for her team-leading seventh goal of the season.

The ESU offense wasn't done there, as Cerda and Strauser struck for back-to-back scores within a span of 25 seconds to extend the lead to 6-0 late in the contest. Both goals were set up by nice crosses into the middle of the box, with Strauser picking up the helper on Cerda's goal, and Gruwell notching the assist on Strauser's tally.

The Warriors capped things off with their seventh goal of the match with just 31 seconds showing on the clock. Herrera sent a thru ball to Guilfoyle, who went in one-on-one with the keeper and fired low left for her first collegiate goal.

The seven-goal performance from the Warriors was their third time of the year scoring five or more goals, joining victories over Chestnut Hill (6-0) and Lock Haven (5-2).

ESU rounds out its home stand with a match against Shippensburg on Wednesday, October 30 at 7 p.m.
