ESU Aces its Way to Seventh Consecutive Victory with 3-1 Win against Edinboro

EAST STROUDSBURG – After dropping its opening set, the East Stroudsburg University women's volleyball team rallied to win each of the next three sets to defeat Edinboro University 3-1 (17-25, 25-18, 25-13, 25-15) on Thursday night at Koehler Fieldhouse.
 
ESU (12-3, 3-0 PSAC Central) improved to 5-0 this season at home and pushed its winning streak to seven matches after beating the Fighting Scots. The Warriors hit .222 as a team in the third set and finished the night by hitting .360 in the fourth set, tallying 11 kills.
 
Senior Sam Dunphy and senior Sarah Smith paced the Warriors with nine kills each, while Smith added 13 digs and two service aces. Trea-sure Ketter recorded a match-high eight total blocks in the contest, while freshman Rachel Cain added a team-high 21 assists and nine digs. Sophomore Emily Meredith notched a match-high 18 digs for ESU.
 
The Warriors opened the match with an ace as Cain gave ESU a quick 1-0 lead. Sophomore Caylinn Davis made it 4-1 following a kill off an assist from Meredith. Edinboro rallied to knot the score 4-4 and would later take a 10-6 advantage following a 3-0 run.
 
Edinboro increased its lead to 20-10 following a 5-0 run that would be capped by a kill from Erica Sharp. The Warriors ended the run with a kill by Smith and trimmed the deficit to 20-13 after an ace from Smith. The Fighting Scots closed the set with back-to-back points as Sally Sterkel delivered a kill to preserve the 25-17 victory.
 
ESU rallied from a pair of early deficits in the second set to eventually take a 10-8 lead off an attack error by Edinboro. With the set tied 16-16, the Warriors used a pair of blocks to take the lead and the momentum away from the Fighting Scots. A 4-0 rally for the Warriors increased the advantage to 21-17 after an ace from Dunphy and a bad set by Edinboro.
 
A block by Smith and senior Jasmine Williams capped a 4-0 run by the Warriors and secured a 25-18 victory in the set to knot the score 1-1.
 
The Warriors jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the third set as Ketter and Dunphy teamed up for a block off an attack by the Fighting Scots. Leading 7-6, ESU pulled away from Edinboro with a 4-0 run that stretched the lead to 11-6. A kill by Williams later in the set gave the Warriors a six-point cushion at 16-10. A pair of service aces from freshman Jessica Irwin fueled a 5-0 rally for the Warriors, who took a 22-12 advantage against Edinboro. Kills from Williams and Smith coupled with a solo block by Ketter secured the 25-13 victory for the Warriors.
 
Leading 2-1 in the match, ESU scored seven of the opening eight points in the fourth set to force a timeout by the Fighting Scots. Freshman Mya Young recorded a pair of kills for ESU during a 7-0 stretch that saw the Warriors increase their lead to 14-2. Consecutive aces from Dunphy stretched the advantage to 17-5 for ESU.
 
Sophomore Clare Davison gave ESU a 21-11 edge in the set following a kill that sparked a 3-0 run by the Warriors. Edinboro rallied to trim the deficit to 23-15 late in the set after a 4-0 run only to see the Warriors get a kill from Dunphy followed by an ace from Davison to record the 25-15 victory and the 3-1 win in the match.
 
The Warriors continue their three-match homestand on Friday at 7 p.m. against Gannon. ESU closes the weekend on Saturday night inside Koehler with a 6:30 match up against Mercyhurst.
