EAST STROUDSBURG – Senior
Karly Conway provided the game-winning goal for the second-ranked East Stroudsburg University women's field hockey team on Wednesday as the Warriors defeated No. 7 Millersville in overtime, 1-0 at Whitenight Field.
ESU (16-2, 9-1 PSAC) recorded its fourth 9-1 record in PSAC action in the last five seasons and has dropped just six regular-season contests in conference play since 2015. The Warriors held a 12-2 advantage in shots on goal and tallied 19 shots overall in the contest against the Marauders.
Millersville tallied the lone shot on frame in the first period as Asia Weaver tried to beat ESU senior goalkeeper
Maddie Richie 7:48 into the contest.
Sophomore
Celeste Veenstra recorded ESU's first shot on goal in the contest at the 26:57 mark as she would be denied by Millersville goalkeeper Autumn Peters. Senior
Emily Spangler followed with her first shot on goal in the contest three minutes later as Peters would come up with another big stop for the Marauders.
After going scoreless through the opening 30 minutes of action, Veenstra looked to get the Warriors onto the scoreboard just 52 seconds into the third period. Veenstra's opportunity would be stopped yet again by Peters.
Richie kept the game scoreless following a save against Millersville's Erica Tarsi at the 39:06 mark. ESU would be unable to break the scoreless tie with back-to-back shots with less than five minutes to play in the period as Conway and Veenstra would be denied by Peters and the Marauders.
The Warriors and Marauders would need extra time to decide a winner as 60 minutes would not be enough. Peters stopped a pair of attempts from Veenstra two minutes into the overtime session to keep the contest scoreless.
Junior
Jada Martin would start a 2-on-1 rush for the Warriors from mid-field as she found Conway to the left of the goalkeeper. Conway would find the back of the net at the 64:03 mark of the contest to give the Warriors a 1-0 victory in their regular-season finale.
Veenstra finished with seven shots on goal for ESU in the contest, while Conway recorded a pair on frame. Richie made two saves in net en route to recording her 16th win of the season for the Warriors.
The Warriors will await to see who they will face in the semifinals of the 2019 PSAC Field Hockey Championships. ESU secured a first-round bye by virtue of finishing second in the conference during the regular season.
