EAST STROUDSBURG – A 3-1 victory (25-11, 25-20, 24-26, 25-23) for the East Stroudsburg University women's volleyball team on Saturday night made it two straight wins for the Warriors against Mercyhurst dating back to last season.
ESU (13-4, 4-1) got back into the win column at home after seeing its seven-match winning streak come to an end on Friday night inside Koehler Fieldhouse. The Warriors entered the match 3-12 all-time against the Lakers and just 1-5 since the 2013 season.
The Warriors tallied 16 total blocks and 13 aces in the match to go along with a .256 hitting percentage as a team. Mercyhurst committed 30 attack errors in the match and hit just .141 as a team. ESU was paced in the kills department by senior
Sarah Smith, sophomore
Jasmine Mooney, and senior
Sam Dunphy. Freshman
Rachel Cain recorded five aces for ESU, while redshirt junior
Trea-sure Ketter added 11 total blocks in the match.
ESU would take an 8-3 advantage in the opening set as Smith and Mooney combined to record three kills to fuel a 4-0 run for the Warriors. The Warriors increased the advantage to 9-3 before a kill from Tess Ganich ended the run.
Another 4-0 rally for ESU would increase its lead to 16-6 as the Warriors tallied back-to-back blocks from Ketter and Dunphy, and Ketter and Smith. The Momentum would stay on ESU's side through the remainder of the set as a 6-0 run gave the Warriors a 22-9 cushion against the Lakers. ESU would take the opening set 25-11 following a kill from Smith.
The Warriors opened the second set with a 5-0 run and put the Lakers on their heels until they would trim the deficit to 6-4. Mercyhurst would eventually battle and pull within a point of the Warriors later in the set as a kill and ace from Zoe Gadomski made it 17-16. Mercyhurst would take a brief lead in the set as an attack error made it 19-18.
ESU closed the set by scoring seven of the final eight points to secure the 25-20 victory in the set and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
A sweep would not be in the works on Saturday night as Mercyhurst took the third set from the Warriors. ESU would battle back from a 22-14 deficit in the set to make it 22-19 following a pair of kills from sophomore
Caylinn Davis and sophomore
Kenzie Guimont. Mercyhurst tallied the final two points of the set to secure the 26-24 victory against the Warriors and extend the match to a fourth set.
The Warriors and Lakers traded a pair of 3-0 runs in the fourth set as Mercyhurst knotted the score 10-10 before responded by taking a 13-10 advantage. The Lakers rallied to trim the deficit from 22-18 to 22-21 following two kills from Tess Ganich and Katie Baird.
ESU would avoid going any further into the set as senior
Jasmine Williams delivered a kill off an assist from Cain to secure the 25-23 victory and give the Warriors a 3-1 overall win in the match.
Cain paced ESU with 40 assists in the contest, while sophomore
Emily Meredith added a team-high 19 digs. Smith also tallied another double-double for ESU after tallying 18 digs to go along with the 12 kills.
ESU continues its way through the conference as the Warriors travel to Pitt-Johnstown on Friday and IUP on Saturday. The Warriors face Pitt-Johnstown at 7 p.m. before turning around to face IUP at 1 p.m. the next day.
