ERIE, Pa. – The East Stroudsburg University women's volleyball team will make its first appearance in the PSAC Volleyball Championship match since 1987 as the Warriors recorded a 3-1 victory against Shippensburg on Friday night at the Hammermill Center.
ESU (28-6) avenged a 3-2 loss earlier in the season against the Raiders to win its first semifinal contest since 1987 as the Warriors will face Shepherd on Saturday night at 7 p.m. for a chance to win its first PSAC title since 1987.
Senior
Sarah Smith finished with a double-double in the match for the Warriors, tallying 12 kills and 11 digs. She also added three service aces and three blocks on the night, while sophomore
Jasmine Mooney delivered a match-high 15 kills for ESU. Redshirt junior
Trea-sure Ketter added eight blocks and 11 kills on the night, while freshman
Rachel Cain delivered a match-high 30 assists.
Trailing 12-11 in the opening set, ESU used a 7-0 run to take an 18-12 advantage against the Raiders. The run featured a pair of blocks from Ketter and senior
Sam Dunphy. Shippensburg ended the rally by recording a pair of points before ESU went on another run to extend the lead to 23-14.
Mooney recorded four consecutive kills for the Warriors to make it 24-14 in the set before sophomore
Emily Meredith secured the victory with an ace to give ESU a 1-0 lead in the match.
ESU broke an 11-11 tie in the second set with a 4-0 run to take a 15-11 lead. Cain and senior
Jasmine Williams capped the rally with a block for the Warriors. Shippensburg would knot the score before another 3-0 rally gave ESU an 18-15 edge.
A block by Ketter and Smith extended the lead to 21-17 before Meredith delivered another ace for the second-straight set to secure the 25-20 victory and give ESU a 2-0 lead in the match against the Raiders.
The Raiders controlled the tempo of play in the third set from start to finish as Shippensburg rallied to force a fourth set by virtue of a 25-12 victory. The Warriors trimmed the deficit to 10-7 in the set before the Raiders used a 9-0 run to increase their advantage to 19-7.
The lead would change hands several times in the fourth set as ESU used a 4-0 run with the score knotted 10-10 to gain some momentum. A 3-0 rally increased the advantage for the Warriors to 17-11. Smith would later tally consecutive kills to make it 20-13 in favor of ESU. The Warriors would seal the 3-1 victory in the match as Mooney and Ketter recorded a block followed by a kill from Mooney that secured the 25-16 win.
Admission for all PSAC Volleyball Championship matches will be $10 for adults and $5 for children. There is no admission charge for students with a valid I.D. from a PSAC school or those with a PSAC Pass.
