Stout Defensive Effort and Second-Half Offense Guides Warriors Past Chestnut Hill, 72-45

EAST STROUDSBURG – The Warriors used a 29-point third quarter on Tuesday night to deliver a season-high offensive output in a 72-45 victory against Chestnut Hill inside Koehler Fieldhouse in a non-conference matchup.
 
ESU (3-3) improved to 2-0 this season at home and rallied after seeing the Griffins take a 20-10 lead with just over nine minutes left to play in the second quarter. Chestnut Hill would be hindered by a 2-of-10 performance from the field in the third quarter.
 
Senior Tiffany Lapotsky paced the Warriors with a game-high 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting and a 4-for-4 effort at the free-throw line. She also added four assists and five steals, while redshirt junior Sadie Cresswell tallied a career-high 14 points for ESU. Freshman Claire Courter drained a career-best three 3-pointers on the evening and finished with 12 points to go along with a team-high five rebounds.
 
The lead would change hands several times early in the first quarter as it would remain a one-possession contest until the Griffins took a 13-7 lead with less than a minute to play before the end of the quarter. Chestnut Hill hit a jumper with seven ticks left on the clock to take a 15-9 advantage into the second quarter.
 
Chestnut Hill used a 5-0 run early in the second quarter to take a double-digit lead against ESU as a trey from Maura Conroy with 9:01 left on the clock made it 20-10. Lapotsky started the comeback for the Warriors, connecting on a 3-pointer and a layup to trim the deficit to five.
 
Trailing 22-17, the Warriors trimmed the gap to 22-19 following a pair of made free-throw attempts by Lapotsky and would even the score following a trey from senior Jordan Hertz with 5:35 left to play in the half. The Griffins hit a layup in the paint with 30 seconds left to make it 27-26 in favor of ESU heading into the half.
 
Chestnut Hill cut the deficit to 31-28 early in the third quarter before the Warriors used a 7-0 run to extend the lead to 38-28 with 6:52 left on the clock. Cresswell sparked the run for ESU by draining a trey and finishing a layup in the paint.
 
ESU's advantage increased to 47-31 with less than three minutes to play in the quarter as Hertz found Courter open for a 3-ball to make it a 16-point gap. The Warriors would take a 56-31 lead into the fourth quarter as Lapotsky went coast-to-coast off a rebound to give ESU a 25-point cushion.
 
Sophomore Maggie Wigoda helped to give ESU its largest lead of the night with less than 40 seconds left on the clock as she went 1-of-2 at the charity stripe. The Griffins trimmed the deficit to 72-45 with 27 seconds left as Amber Washington hit a pair of free throws before the Warriors would run out the clock and secure the victory.
 
ESU hit eight 3-pointers in the contest and finished 12-of-14 at the charity stripe while tallying 32 points in the paint. The Warriors also recorded 16 steals in the contest and forced 23 turnovers, which resulted in 23 points. Hertz helped ESU tally 21 assists on the night as she added nine. The Warriors host Jefferson on Dec. 1 beginning at 1 p.m. inside Koehler Fieldhouse.
