SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The East Stroudsburg University men's wrestling team recorded a pair of dual victories as they prepare for the NCAA Div. II Super Region 1 Championships. The Warriors defeated RPI 56-0 and followed with a 40-17 victory against the host, Springfield Technical Community College.
ESU (7-6) recorded nine pins between the two matches, including five in its first dual against RPI. STCC tallied three victories against the Warriors with wins at 141, 165, and 285.
Senior
Ciovel Cuevas notched a pair of victories for ESU at 149 pounds. Cuevas delivered a 19-1 tech fall against RPI's John Douglas and followed with a 10-1 major decision over STCC's Gabriel Johnson.
The Warriors received victories against RPI via fall from sophomore
Peter Nace (141), junior
Pierre Liciaga (157), sophomore
Christian Smith (165), and freshman
Ronnie Simmons, Jr. (184). Sophomore
Dillon Warner earned a 12-10 decision for ESU at 197 pounds against RPI's Oliver Feagin.
RPI would forfeit four individual bouts in the match at 125, 133, 174, and 285.
ESU opened its second dual with a 12-0 advantage following a pair of forfeits by STCC at 125 and 133 pounds. The Rams trimmed the deficit to 12-6 as Marcos Mercado pinned redshirt sophomore
Michael Goebel in a time of 5:43.
The Warriors gained back momentum as Cuevas and sophomore
Marquan Payne tallied consecutive victories to put ESU up 22-6. Cuevas defeated Johnson to make it 16-6 and would be followed by a pin from Payne over STCC's Ali Zebian in 2:07 to make it 22-6.
STCC won at 165 pounds but would see ESU respond with three wins from redshirt freshman

The Warriors will head to Erie, Pa. for the NCAA Div. II Super Region 1 Championships on Feb. 23 at Mercyhurst.
