EDINBORO, Pa. – Senior
Aspen Gaita earned her third-career PSAC title after topping the field in the 60-meter hurdles final, and she added a runner-up performance in the pentathlon to help East Stroudsburg University to a fourth-place finish at the 2019 PSAC Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Seniors
Marissa Flim and
Carly Gregas also achieved All-PSAC status with second-place efforts in the 60m dash and high jump, respectively, while junior
Sarah Klag received all-conference honors with a third place result in the 400m. The Warriors had 15 top-eight finishes overall at the meet, which was condensed from two days to one due to the threat of extreme wind conditions at Edinboro on Sunday.
Gaita, who was previously a conference champion in the 60m hurdles indoors and the 100m hurdles outdoors back in 2017, recorded a season-best time of 8.72 in this afternoon's final. That mark was 0.27 ahead of the second-place finisher, and it was under the Division II provisional standard of 8.81.
The Warriors had two top-five finishers in the pentathlon, as Gaita took second with 3,385 points while senior
Victoria Matthews placed fourth with a PR total of 3,096 points. Gaita was fourth or higher in 4 of 5 contested events; she entered the weekend ranked 15th nationally in the pentathlon. Matthews concluded the multi with a second-place showing in the 800m; her final score is ranked No. 6 all-time at ESU.
Matthews also cracked the top five in the high jump after posting a top effort of 5-4 1/4. That was just below Gregas, who recorded her top career finish at PSAC's with a PR clearing of 5-5 1/4. Gregas placed third in the high jump at both the indoor and outdoor conference meets last season.
Flim matched her runner-up performance in the 60m dash final after crossing the line in a season-best time of 7.73. ESU had two scorers in that event as well, with junior
Tiana Webster (7.82) taking seventh place. Webster recorded a PR of 7.73 in the prelims, moving her into third in the ESU all-time record book.
Klag scored individually for the first time in her Warrior career, taking third in the 400m after completing her heat in a season-best time of 58.74. Sophomore
Brittany Carratura rounded out ESU's individual scorers on the track with an eighth place showing in the 800m (2:24.90).
Junior
Me'Saj Closs led the way in the field events for the Warriors. She scored in the weight throw for a third-straight year, registering a career-high fourth place finish with a PR toss of 52-0 that ranks No. 2 all-time at ESU. Junior
Sam Giangrasso (7th, 50-2 3/4) added her first-ever top-eight conference finish in the event.
Juniors
Tatiana Williams (7th, 36-6 1/4) and
Barbara Grossov (7th, 38-9 3/4) also scored for ESU in the triple jump and shot put, respectively. Williams' mark is a new PR which ranks No. 8 in program history, while Grossov earns her first top-eight finish at PSAC's.
Two Warrior relays cracked the top eight as well. Klag, senior
Decontee Krayee, junior
Allyson Stitzer and junior
Morgan Dey were fifth in the 4x400m (4:05.95), while freshman
Kylie Stangle, Krayee, Carratura and junior
Emily Eder were seventh in the DMR (13:00.45).
ESU's fourth-place finish at PSAC's is its second-highest showing since 2014, only one spot back of the third-place result achieved at the 2018 conference meet. With Gaita's first-place effort in the 60m hurdles, the Warrior women have won at least one individual title at six of the past seven indoor championships.
Kutztown claimed this year's PSAC Indoor Championship with a final team total of 100.5 points. Slippery Rock (89.33), Shippensburg (85.5), ESU (70) and Millersville (60) rounded out the top five.
