Early Lead for ESU Women’s Basketball Slips Away in 88-63 Loss against Shippensburg

EAST STROUDSBURG – The East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team scored eight of the first 10 points in the contest but would see the Shippensburg University Raiders rally for an 88-63 win inside Koehler Fieldhouse on Wednesday night.
 
ESU (8-13, 5-9 PSAC) allowed its opponent to score 80 or more points for a fourth consecutive game on Wednesday while taking 82 shots from the field. The Warriors, who connected nine-times from 3-point range in the contest, shot just 25.6 percent from the field. Shippensburg (11-12, 7-8) shot 58 percent from the field and went 29-of-42 at the free-throw line in the contest.
 
The Warriors would be paced by a pair of juniors in the contest as Jordan Hertz and Tiffany Lapotsky combined to score 28 points. Hertz matched a career-high with 11 assists for ESU to go along with eight rebounds and three steals. Lapotsky took over sole possession of third-place in consecutive contests scoring 10 or more points, hitting double-digits for the 14th straight game. She also added a game-high four steals to go along with eight boards and three assists.
 
Ariel Jones scored a game-high 34 points for the Raiders on 9-of-16 shooting from the field. Jones also finished 15-of-20 at the charity stripe in the contest for Shippensburg. She paced five Raiders players in double-digits on the night as Aunbrielle Green added 18 points and 11 rebounds. Kryshell Gordy pulled-down a game-high 16 boards to go along with 10 points.
 
ESU opened the contest on a 5-0 run following a 3-ball from Lapotsky and would force the Raiders to call a timeout. Green would get the Raiders on the scoreboard with a layup to end the run by the Warriors. ESU quickly came back down the court and would drain another trey as sophomore Abby Schoffstall connected off an assist from Lapotsky to make it 8-2.
 
Shippensburg used a 9-0 run to erase its deficit and eventually take the lead with 6:18 left in the opening quarter as Pettis finished a layup in the paint. Jones would hit a pair of free throws to make it 11-8 Shippensburg before sophomore Amanda Pike knotted the score with a 3-ball. The Raiders would take a 20-16 lead into the second quarter as both teams traded free throws in the final minute.
 
The Warriors trimmed the deficit to a single possession numerous times in the second quarter but would be unable to take the lead against Shippensburg. Trailing 35-26 with 2:45 left before the half, ESU closed on a 4-0 run as it would hold the Raiders scoreless going into the break.

Shippensburg outscored ESU 31-15 in the third quarter and would lead by as many as 27 points in the fourth quarter with less than a minute to play. The Raiders tallied 52 points in the paint on the night and out-rebounded ESU 49-38. The Warriors did force Shippensburg into 27 turnovers and recorded 17 steals.
 
The Warriors wrap-up a three-game homestand on Saturday against Mansfield at 1 p.m. ESU will host its annual Pink Game along with Alumni Day festivities.
