ASTON, Pa. – East Stroudsburg University continued its strong recent play on Saturday, as the Warriors picked up a pair of one-run wins over Franklin Pierce to complete a doubleheader sweep at the Maplezone Sports Institute.
ESU (8-10) has now won eight of its past 10 games overall. The Warriors won 3-2 in the opener before rallying for a 4-3 victory in Game 2.
Sophomore
Marissa Govan and freshman
Denva Shaw-Tait each had three RBIs on the afternoon, while freshman
Mikayla Pourby and senior
Angelica Dark earned wins in the circle.
All three of ESU's runs in Game 1 came with two outs in the bottom half of the third. Govan plated both freshman
Rachel Seiverd and sophomore
Sofia Cecchin on a two-run double, and Shaw-Tait followed with a double of her own to provide an insurance tally.
That was enough offense for Pourby, who won her fourth-consecutive start to improve to 4-2 overall in her debut season. Pourby struck out five in her complete-game outing, allowing two runs (one earned), six hits and one walk.
Two of Pourby's strikeouts came in the final inning, with the last of those K's stranding the tying run at second base.
ESU trailed 2-0 through three and a half innings in Game 2. The Warriors cut the deficit in half on a run-scoring double by Seiverd in the bottom of the fourth, and they went ahead with three more runs in the fifth. Govan scored junior
Kaylee Hazewski on a single after Hazewski had swiped a pair of bases, and Shaw-Tait put ESU in front with her first collegiate home run.
The Ravens (2-8) made it 4-3 on a leadoff home run to begin the sixth, but sophomore
Mickayla Grow came on in relief to record the final six outs for her second save of the season.
Dark worked the first five-plus innings for the Warriors, allowing eight hits and fanning five batters.
Govan, Seiverd and senior
Madison Vicendese each collected two hits in the Game 2 victory, while Hazewski upped her PSAC-leading stolen base total to 19.
The same two teams have another doubleheader scheduled for Sunday, with Game 1 at Maplezone scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
