Warriors Clinch PSAC Postseason Berth with 87-66 Victory at Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Entering its final regular-season contest of the season on Saturday, the East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team secured the No. 5 seed in the upcoming PSAC playoffs with an 87-66 victory at Millersville.  
 
ESU (12-15, 9-11 PSAC) finished in a three-way tie in the PSAC East Standings with Lock Haven and Millersville. The Bald Eagles secured the fourth seed, while the Marauders received the sixth seed. The Warriors will travel to Lock Haven on Monday night for a 6 p.m. matchup against the Bald Eagles.
 
The Warriors, who clinched their seventh-straight PSAC postseason berth, will face Lock Haven in a playoff matchup for the first time since the 1985-86 season. The Bald Eagles return to the playoffs for the first time since the 2015-16 season and will host a PSAC tournament game for the first time since 1990-91.
 
Senior Noelle Powell fueled the Warrior offense, pouring in a season-high 20 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field. Powell connected five-times from 3-point range as ESU drained 10 3's as a team. Sophomore Marlene Bassett returned to her early-season form for ESU as she tallied 17 points to go along with a game-high eight rebounds. Junior Tiffany Lapotsky (14 pts), junior Dominique Rayam (13 pts), and sophomore Abby Schoffstall (12 pts) also added double-digit point performances for the Warriors.
 
Lauren Lister finished with 20 points and seven boards for the Marauders, while Courtney Dimoff added 14 pts and three treys. Olivia Mottern added 11 points for Millersville, who went 6-of-18 from downtown and 12-of-21 at the free-throw line. Millersville held a 3-point advantage with 6:02 left in the second quarter, its lone lead of the contest.
 
Lapotsky would get the Warriors started on the right path as she connected on a trey following a steal by Schoffstall with 9:22 left in the opening quarter. Schoffstall would increase the advantage to 7-0 as she finished a layup off another steal. ESU opened the contest on an 11-0 run as Lapotsky sank a pair of free throws with just over five minutes to play.
 
Millersville ended its scoring drought at the 4:46 mark as Lister finished a layup in the paint. She trimmed the deficit to seven before Rayam hit a layup off the fast break to make it 13-4. The Warriors increased their lead to nine before the Marauders rallied to cut the deficit to 15-11 before the end of the opening quarter. Millersville took its lone lead of the contest with 6:33 remaining in the second quarter as Lister made it 18-17. She gave the Marauders a three-point cushion before ESU got things back on track offensively. Powell gave ESU back the lead with a 3-ball with 5:16 left on the clock.
 
Powell tallied eight consecutive points for the Warriors and helped open the lead to 27-22 with just over four minutes left to play before the half. Lapotsky gave ESU its final points of the half with less than a minute to play off a trey to make it 39-29 heading into the locker room.
 
ESU took an 18-point advantage with 5:16 left to play in the third quarter thanks to a layup from Basset which made it 50-32. The Warriors would hold onto their double-digit advantage heading into the fourth quarter as Schoffstall connected from downtown to put ESU up 60-46.
 
The Marauders would rally again in the fourth quarter after ESU upped its lead to 70-53. Dimoff hit a jumper to trim the deficit to 15 as Millersville worked to pull within a 70-60 margin of the Warriors. ESU would go on an 11-1 run to increase its lead to 83-64 with 1:28 left to play in the contest. A layup from Rayam with 38 ticks left on the clock gave ESU its largest lead of the contest, 86-66.
 
The Warriors will head to Thomas Fieldhouse on the campus of Lock Haven University for the opening round of the PSAC tournament on Monday beginning at 6 p.m. ESU and Lock Haven split their season series with both teams winning on their home court.
