SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The highest-scoring offense in East Stroudsburg University's program history had plenty of runs left for the season's final doubleheader.
A sacrifice fly by freshman
Rachel Seiverd capped a four-run rally in the seventh inning of Game 2, as the Warriors topped Shippensburg 12-11 to complete their first-ever season sweep of the Raiders.
The opener was full of offensive fireworks as well, with ESU edging Shippensburg 8-7 in eight innings. The Warriors (26-22, 8-8 PSAC) conclude the spring with their most victories since 2007, and they have won seven-straight games over the Raiders (24-20, 9-7 PSAC) dating back to last season.
Sophomore
Sofia Cecchin registered ESU's first four-hit game of 2019 to lead the visitors in Game 1, as she went 4 for 4 with her first collegiate homer, a double and two RBIs.
Sophomores
Kaitlyn Caleen and
Ashley Spencer each homered in Game 2, with the duo combining for five hits and four RBIs. Freshman
Mikayla Pourby added three hits and three RBIs, while senior
Madison Vicendese went 3 for 3 with four runs scored and two RBIs in her final collegiate game.
ESU improved its record in PSAC East play by two games for a third year in a row. The Warriors set new single-season program records in both runs scored (264) and stolen bases (126), eclipsing marks which had stood since 2006 and 1995, respectively.
Game 1: ESU 8, Shippensburg 7 (8 innings)
Cecchin's memorable performance at the plate highlighted an eventful opener which contained several momentum swings for both sides. ESU opened up the scoring in the third on Cecchin's long ball, which sailed over the left field fence on a 2-2 count.
After the Raiders jumped in front with two runs in the bottom half of the frame, freshman
Mikayla Pourby's fourth homer of the season leveled up the score once again in the fourth. Shippensburg again responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half, and ESU once again tied the score in the fifth. This time, it was Caleen providing the offense, as she pulled a two-run double to left field with two outs to score Cecchin and junior
Kaylee Hazewski.
Both teams plated a pair of runs in the seventh inning to force extras, as a two-run shot by Shippensburg's Courtney Coy cancelled out RBI hits by Vicendese and Spencer.
Cecchin had the go-ahead hit for the visitors in the eighth, with a double to right-center scoring freshman
Denva Shaw-Tait. Freshman
Rachel Jacavage then provided a key insurance run after her safety squeeze allowed freshman
Lexi Wright to race home from third. Jacavage recorded her first collegiate RBI on the play.
Pourby, who started the game in the circle, came back in during the bottom of the eighth after Shippensburg began the frame with a single and an RBI double. Pourby retired her first two batters faced, and after back-to-back walks she induced a pop out to Wright to clinch the victory and pick up her first save in the process.
Sophomore
Mickayla Grow worked two innings to pick up the victory. She concludes the year with an 8-2 record and a 3.26 earned-run average.
Game 2: ESU 12, Shippensburg 11
Another back-and-forth game went ESU's way for good in the seventh, as the Warriors scored four times to rally from an 11-8 deficit. The first six batters reached in the inning. Vicendese plated the first run on an RBI double, two runs scored on a fielder's choice by Pourby which included a throwing error, and the go-ahead run came in on Seiverd's sacrifice fly to right field.
Senior
Angelica Dark then retired the Raiders in order in the bottom half to earn a victory in her final collegiate game.
Seven of the Warrior runs came in the fourth and fifth innings. All four runs in the fourth came via the long ball, as Caleen lifted a three-run shot to right center while Spencer hit a solo blast to center. Caleen led ESU in both home runs (5) and RBIs (36) during her sophomore season.
RBIs by Vicendese, Pourby and Cecchin provided the runs in the fifth. Vicendese reached base on all five trips to the plate, as she was hit by two pitches to go along with her three hits. She topped the team with a .355 batting average on the year, including a .458 (11-24) output in the season's final week.
ESU also had four steals in the win, with Shaw-Tait, Jacavage, Cecchin and sophomore
MacKenzie Lewis all successful on the basepaths. Shaw-Tait and Lewis each had two steals on the afternoon.
With today's victories, ESU earns its first season sweep over Shippensburg in the program's 45-year history.
