EAST STROUDSBURG – A pair of wins by the East Stroudsburg University women's volleyball team against Southern Connecticut and Caldwell on Saturday helped the Warriors to go a perfect 4-0 at the 2019 ESU Invitational hosted inside Koehler Fieldhouse.
ESU (9-3) opened the day with a quick but competitive 3-0 sweep against Southern Connecticut State and followed with a 3-1 victory against Caldwell University. The Warriors have won eight of their last nine outings and will open conference action next weekend.
The Warriors had four players cross the double-digit plateau in kills on the day as senior
Sarah Smith recorded 17 kills, four aces, 17 digs, and seven blocks. Senior
Sam Dunphy added 15 kills and 12 digs, while sophomore
Jasmine Mooney recorded 14 kills. Sophomore
Kenzie Guimont tallied 12 kills and hit .348 for the Warriors. Freshman setter
Rachel Cain notched a team-high 27 assists on the day.
ESU had a close battle in the first set of its match against the Owls to open the day as the Warriors held on for a 25-20 victory. The Owls knotted the score once in the set but would be unable to take the lead against the Warriors.
The second set featured a pair of tie scores before the Warriors used a closing push to take a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-17 victory. ESU also won the third set 25-19 and held the lead from start to finish in all three sets against the Owls.
In their final match of the weekend, the Warriors surged out of the gates against the Cougars to take the opening set by a score of 25-5. ESU hit .562 in the set as a team and tallied 10 kills on 16 total attempts.
The Warriors won the second set 25-14 and looked to sweep another match on the weekend before Caldwell came battling back in the third set. Both teams would hit over .300 as Caldwell notched 10 kills as a team and lead for a majority of the set against the Warriors.
ESU responded by taking the fourth set 25-13 to secure the victory against the Cougars. The set would feature a pair of lead changes and two knotted scores. Despite committing eight attack errors in the set, ESU used the 12 kills that it tallied to complete the 4-0 weekend. The Warriors recorded 47 kills in the match.
Following the completion of play on Saturday night, the ESU Invitational All-Tournament Team was announced. The team consisted of Amanda Maier (Stonehill), Gianna Napoleon (Jefferson), Samantha Ashton (Caldwell), Grace Whitney (West Chester), Sarah Polacek (West Chester),
Sarah Smith (ESU),
Trea-sure Ketter (ESU), and
Emily Meredith (ESU).
ESU heads to Clarion and Slippery Rock next weekend to open PSAC action against the Golden Eagles and The Rock.
