MANSFIELD, Pa. – Sophomore
Hannah Barbush scored in the first half and sophomore
Celeste Veenstra added a goal in the second half as the third-ranked East Stroudsburg University women's field hockey blanked Mansfield 2-0 on Saturday at Karl Van Norman Field.
ESU (7-0) had an opponent take more penalty corners in a contest for the first time this season as Mansfield tallied 11 corners in the contest compared to eight for the Warriors. ESU held a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Both sides would go scoreless in the opening quarter as ESU recorded a pair of shots on net against Mounties goalkeeper Brittany Ryan. Veenstra opened the second quarter with a shot for the Warriors that would be denied by Ryan just over a minute into action. ESU senior goalkeeper
Maddie Richie had to make her first save of the contest against Mansfield's Christie Buyer.
The Warriors would be awarded a penalty corner with one second left on the clock in the quarter as Barbush took a feed at the top of the circle from
Kristen English that would be Ryan to the left and make it 1-0 ESU heading into the half.
Mansfield had six corners in the third period but would only be able to translate that into one shot on goal against Richie, while ESU forced Ryan to make three saves in net for the Mounties. ESU held a 7-6 advantage in shots in the quarter.
Leading 1-0, Veenstra would take the second penalty stroke opportunity of the season for ESU as she converted her team-leading ninth goal of the season for the Warriors. The Warriors would defend their 2-0 advantage as Richie denied an opportunity by Saramae Radel and later a chance by Larissa Motts.
Richie (7-0) recorded another shutout to start the season for the Warriors and has stopped all 10 shots that she has faced. Her shutout streak is approaching 400 minutes in net for the Warriors and has helped ESU to remain unbeaten on the season.
ESU hosts Kutztown next Wednesday at 4 p.m. as the Warriors and Golden Bears will match up at Whitenight Field.
