EAST STROUDSBURG – A pair of goals in the opening 12 minutes of action from Bloomsburg University helped the Huskies to avenge a loss earlier in the season to the No. 21 East Stroudsburg University women's soccer team. The Warriors dropped a 2-1 decision on Wednesday at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
ESU (4-2, 3-2 PSAC East) wouldn't be able to complete the season sweep of the Huskies as Bloomsburg held a 12-4 advantage in shots in the first half and took five shots on goal.
Natalie Holmes opened the scoring for Bloomsburg at the 7:21 mark as she beat ESU sophomore goalkeeper
Mauri Jackson to give the Huskies some early momentum on the road.
Mackenzie Gebhardt doubled the Bloomsburg lead in the 12th minute off a corner kick. Gebhardt's header off a corner from Holmes beat Jackson to make it 2-0.
Jackson made three saves against the Huskies as time ticked away in the half, denying Lauren Hoelke in the 22nd minute, Paige Harris in the 29th minute, and Abby Groff in the 36th minute of action.
ESU had several opportunities in the second half to try and cut into the Bloomsburg advantage but would be unable to break through against the Huskies until the 88th minute. Freshman
Brienn Seaman scored her first goal as a member of the Warriors at the 87:45 mark as she finished off a frantic push by ESU to try and get the score knotted.
Both teams had four corners each in the second half, while Bloomsburg held an 8-6 advantage in shots. Bloomsburg goalkeeper Jenna Hawkins made a pair of saves in the second half for Bloomsburg and improved to 6-1 in net this for the Huskies.
Jackson dropped to 4-2 on the season despite making six saves and doing her best to give the Warriors a chance to make a rally late in the match. She has made at least five saves in five of her six starts this season for ESU, including a season-high seven against Bloomsburg and West Chester.
The Warriors are off this weekend and will head to Shippensburg on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. match against the Raiders. ESU then hosts Lock Haven and Millersville in back-to-back matches at Eiler-Martin Stadium on Oct. 6 and Oct. 9.
