INDIANA, Pa. – The third-ranked East Stroudsburg University women's field hockey team opened PSAC play on Saturday with a 4-0 victory on the road against IUP. The Warriors scored twice in both the second and third quarter.
ESU (8-1, 1-0 PSAC) responded after suffering its first loss of the season on Wednesday by recording another shutout. The Warriors held a 14-1 advantage in shots and 7-0 edge in shots on goal. ESU also took 12 corners in the contest, while IUP went without a corner in the contest.
Senior
Emily Spangler opened the scoring for ESU in the second quarter off an assist from sophomore
Celeste Veenstra. The opportunity would be set up off a corner that was earned by sophomore
Hannah Barbush.
Spangler tallied her second goal of the contest less than two minutes later as she took a feed from senior
Karly Conway. The Warriors applied pressure with back-to-back corners by Veenstra and Barbush.
Senior
Grace Martini increased the ESU lead to 3-0 with 12 minutes left in the third quarter as she beat IUP goalkeeper Lexi Ciano. The Warriors made it 4-0 with 26 seconds left in the third quarter off a penalty stroke taken by Veenstra.
Veenstra, who scored her team-leading 10th goal of the season for the Warriors, improved to 3-3 this season on penalty strokes.
Senior goalkeeper
Maddie Richie improved to 8-1 on the season for ESU despite not recording any saves in net. Ciano made three saves for the Crimson Hawks despite allowing four goals.
Spangler finished with five shots overall and three on goal, while Veenstra tallied five as well for the Warriors.
ESU will head to Shippensburg on Wednesday for a 1:35 p.m. matchup against the Raiders. The contest will be featured on Facebook Live, Twitter, and Periscope as part of the NCAA DII National Showcase.
