MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The East Stroudsburg University women's volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday to finish the Barry University Classic with a 2-2 record to open the season. The Warriors defeated American International 3-1 after dropping their opening match 3-0 against nationally-ranked Barry.
 
The Warriors (2-2) rallied in their second match of the day against American International after dropping the first set to win the next three and hand the Yellow Jackets their third loss of the season. ESU battled against No.16 Barry to start the day, dropping the opening set 25-18 but would be unable to rally in the second or third set to extend the match.
 
Senior outside hitter Sarah Smith paced the Warriors with seven kills against Barry, while sophomore Kenzie Guimont added four kills for ESU. Sophomore Kayla Lugo tallied 16 assists and four digs in the match, while sophomore Emily Meredith added three service aces and a team-high seven digs.
 
Barry was guided by 10 kills from Kishara Gordon and Kristina Filimonova. Gabriela Jansen added seven kills and seven digs, while Bianca Pasca tallied a match-high 23 assists and finished one dig shy of a double-double.
 
In their second match of the day, the Warriors saw the Yellow Jackets take the early momentum as they recorded a 25-22 victory to go up 1-0. Both sides hit below .120 as a team with American International recording 15 kills and 10 attacking errors in the set.
 
ESU battled back in the second set to knot the score 1-1 after holding on for a 25-23 victory. The Warriors tallied 13 kills as a team and took advantage of 10 attacking errors by the Yellow Jackets.
 
The third set would really swing the momentum ESU's way as the Warriors recorded 17 kills and hit .326, committing just three errors on the attack. ESU tallied a 25-20 victory to go up 2-1 in the match against the Yellow Jackets.
 
The Warriors would lead from start to finish in the fourth set as ESU recorded a 25-16 victory to take the match 3-1. The match featured nine lead changes and 17 tied scores through the first three sets of action.
 
Smith paced the Warriors with 14 kills and 12 digs, while senior Sam Dunphy added 12 kills. Senior Jasmine Williams recorded 11 blocks in the contest for ESU, who as a team tallied 16 blocks overall. Sophomore Jasmine Mooney added nine kills for the Warriors, while Meredith tallied 22 digs. Freshman Setter Rachel Cain recorded a career-best 36 assists and tallied eight digs for ESU.
 
ESU heads to Bentley University on Friday for the Sandy Hoffman Memorial Tournament hosted by the Falcons. The Warriors will face Caldwell, Rollins, Molloy, and Bentley in the two-day event.
