ESU Women’s Basketball Uses Quick-Start and Strong Defense in 57-41 Victory against West Chester

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team limited West Chester to 11 first-half points en route to recording a 57-41 victory against the Golden Rams on Wednesday in PSAC East action inside Hollinger Field House.

ESU (13-5, 9-3 PSAC) won its third consecutive contest and recorded just its fourth victory against West Chester since the 2012 season. The Warriors limited the Golden Rams to less than 50 points in a victory for the first time since Feb. 21, 1996 (W, 67-49).

Senior Tiffany Lapotsky passed Allison Howard for seventh on the all-time scoring list in program history after tallying a game-high 22 points for ESU. Lapotsky has 1,279 career points and finished the contest 9-of-19 from the field to go along with four steals. Redshirt junior Sadie Cresswell matched a career-high with five 3-point field goals in the contest and equaled a career-best with 19 points, while redshirt freshman Cassie Ksiazek added a career-high nine points.

The Warriors hit the opening basket of the contest and would lead the rest of the way as Lapotsky finished a layup with 8:54 left on the clock to make it 2-0. Cresswell drained her first trey of the night to put ESU up 5-0 with just over eight minutes left to play in the quarter.

West Chester would get onto the scoreboard with 4:53 left in the contest as Alexis Anderson hit a jumper to trim the deficit to 5-2. The Golden Rams trimmed the gap to 5-4 before ESU closed the first quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 14-4 advantage.

ESU continued its run early in the second quarter as Lapotsky and Cresswell drained back-to-back 3-pointers to increase the Warriors' lead to 20-4. Ksiazek would give ESU a 26-6 advantage with 4:44 left in the half as she converted the old-fashioned 3-point play after being fouled.

Cresswell would give the Warriors their largest lead of the night with 2:23 left to play as she hit another trey to make it 32-9. The Golden Rams closed the scoring in the half with 1:18 left to play as Katherine Fisher finished a layup to trim the deficit to 32-11. West Chester would shoot just 5-of-27 from the field, while the Warriors shot 11-of-25 with seven 3-pointers.

West Chester rallied to trim the deficit to 34-18 early in the third quarter with a 5-0 run that would be highlighted by a trey from Tacari Talford. Lapotsky extended ESU's lead to 40-20 with 4:27 left in the quarter after hitting a layup. The Golden Rams hit a jumper with 32 seconds left in the quarter to slim the gap to 42-26 after getting a jumper from Anderson to drop.

ESU would hold a pair of 21-point leads early in the fourth quarter before West Chester mounted its best offensive stretch of the contest. An 8-0 rally by the Golden Rams trimmed the deficit to 49-36 as Kyra Jefferson hit a jumper with 3:34 left to make it a 13-point spread. The Warriors closed the contest going 5-of-6 at the free-throw line as Cresswell hit a pair of shots with 47 seconds left to make it 57-41 and round-out the scoring.

Despite being out-rebounded 39-37 in the contest, ESU forced the Golden Rams into 12 turnovers and turned those miscues into 19 points on the night. The Warriors also went 10-of-14 at the line, while West Chester went 5-of-7. ESU looks to push its winning streak to four games as the Warriors head to Gannon for a PSAC crossover matchup on Jan. 25 at 1 p.m.
