Nies, Walsh Power ESU in Game Two as Warriors Split Doubleheader at USC Aiken

AIKEN, S.C. – Molly Nies and Morgan Walsh combined for seven RBIs in game two of East Stroudsburg University's doubleheader at USC Aiken on Monday, as the Warriors came out on top in the finale to earn a split in non-conference action against the Pacers. The Warriors dropped the opening contest by a 4-1 margin before responding with a 9-3 victory in game two to earn the split.

The Warriors have continued to show their fight through a tough early part of their schedule, earning splits in each of their last four series, with all their victories coming in game two of those doubleheaders.

ESU moved to 5-9 overall on the year following the split, while USC Aiken moved to 16-8.

GAME 1: USC Aiken 4, ESU 1 | Box Score

Caroline Cockrell limited ESU to five hits and one run while racking up six strikeouts to lead the Pacers to a game one win.

Denva Shaw-Tait went 3-for-3 and launched her second home run in as many games to lead the ESU offense. Shaw-Tait's solo shot in the final inning accounted for the Warriors' lone run in the contest.

Mickayla Grow got the start in the circle for the Warriors, tossing six innings of four-run ball while striking out a pair.

The Pacers jumped on top with a run in the first on a sac fly RBI from Courtney Strauss. They added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth on run-scoring hits from Emily Ayers, Brianna Dow and Shircoria Bosket, which stretched the lead to 4-1.

The Warriors got runners on in the fifth and sixth innings, but weren't able to capitalize until the seventh on Shaw-Tait's long ball. After the homer, Cockrell retired the next three Warriors in a row to finish out the 4-1 win for USC Aiken.

GAME 2: ESU 9, USC Aiken 3 | Box Score

Nies (3-for-3, 4 RBI) and Walsh (3-run homer) had big games at the plate and Leigh Ann Jenkins struck out eight batters in a complete-game effort in the circle, as ESU posted a 9-3 victory in the final game to earn a split.

The Warriors grabbed the lead in the second inning as Nies and Lexi Wright both banged RBI doubles to make it 2-0 ESU.

After the Pacers got one back in their half of the third, ESU answered its next time at the plate with a two-run fourth frame. Nies did the damage for the Warriors once again, this time singling to right center to score Gianna Coyle and Shaw-Tait.

With the Warriors leading by a pair heading into the sixth inning, they broke things open with five runs in the frame. Nies brought home the first run with a single to center, as the freshman collected her career-high fourth RBI of the game. Walsh then delivered the big blow, launching a three-run homer to make it an 8-2 game. Kaitlyn Caleen capped the big inning with an RBI double to center, which padded the advantage to 9-2.

Jenkins yielded one run in the final inning, but she was able to bounce back and eventually close out the 9-3 win to record her first victory of the season.

ESU finishes out its road swing with a doubleheader at Augusta (Ga.) on Tuesday, March 10 beginning at 1 p.m.
