Three Second Quarter Goals Lift No. 6 Field Hockey Past Slippery Rock on Homecoming

EAST STROUDSBURG – The sixth-ranked East Stroudsburg University field hockey scored three goals all in the second period to defeat Slippery Rock, 3-1, on Saturday morning at Whitenight Field.

The Warriors win their third straight game to improve to 10-3 overall and 4-1 in the conference while Slippery Rock dropped to 4-7 on the season and 1-4 in the PSAC.

After a scoreless first quarter, ESU grabbed a 3-0 lead on goals from senior Celeste Veenstra, junior Nicole Krozser and senior Lea Hughes. In the closing seconds of the first half, the Rock converted a penalty stroke to make the score 3-1, but in the second half, ESU held Slippery Rock to just one shot to help secure the victory.

Notables

- Sophomore Amy Supey (9-3) picked up her third straight win despite making zero saves

- Veenstra registered her team-leading seventh goal of the season. She is tied for seventh in the conference

- Krozser scored her fourth goal of the season

- In her 78th career game, Hughes found the back of the net for the first time in her career

- Freshman Giulia Van der Werff recorded her second assist of the year

- ESU held the advantage in shots on goal, 11-1

- The Warriors were granted 13 penalty corners compared to three for Slippery Rock

How it Happened

16:32 | After Slippery Rock was awarded the ball deep in their zone, they attempted a cross field pass the was read perfectly by Veenstra for an interception. The Alkmaar, Netherlands native followed up with a shot into the top right corner to give ESU a 1-0 lead.

19:15 | Less than three minutes, the Warriors extended their lead to 2-0 when Krozser tipped in shot from Van der Werff for her fourth goal of the year. The scoring opportunity started off a penalty corner when an initial shot by Hannah Barbush was blocked. As both teams battled for possession Van der Werff come out with it before taking a shot on goal that ultimately redirected in by Krozser.

28:30 | In the closing minutes of the first half, Hughes found the back of the net for the first time in her career to push ESU's advantage to 3-0. Senior Morgan Mesenbrink sent in a cross field pass that forced Slippery Rock's Grace Burker to come out of net. Burker then attempted to kick the ball of the arc but didn't get enough power on it as it trickled onto the stick of Hughes just in front of the net, who was able to finish for the score.

29:49 | After an intentional foul by the Warriors inside their own arc, Slippery Rock was awarded a penalty stroke with a chance to cut into ESU's lead. Jessie Trube was awarded the opportunity and delivered with a shot into the right corner of the goal as Super dove the opposite way.
