No. 4 Field Hockey’s Season Ends in NCAA DII Semifinals with 2-1 Loss to No. 1 Shippensburg

MILLERSVILLE – Despite leading 1-0 at the half, the fourth ranked East Stroudsburg University field hockey team saw their 2021 season come to an end as No. 1 Shippensburg scored a pair of second half goals to defeat the Warriors, 2-1, in the NCAA DII Semifinals on Friday night at Millersville's Biemesderfer Stadium.

The Warrior finish the season 16-5 overall while the Raiders remain undefeated at 19-0 and advance to Sunday's championship game versus West Chester.

Senior Celeste Veenstra scored with 42 seconds left in the first half to give the Warriors a 1-0 advantage, but the Raiders answered with two goals in the final 30 minutes off the stick of Tess Jedeloo to secure the victory.

Prior to today's game, senior Hannah Barbush was honored as the recipient of the Elite 90 award for the 2021 NCAA Division II Field Hockey Championships.

"I'm really proud of our young ladies and the season that they had," head coach Sandy Miler said. "I thought we played one of our best games of the year pushing Shippensburg to the brink and fighting all the way to the end."

How it Happened

29:18 | After a goal by Jady van Gils was called off earlier in the quarter, the Warriors were awarded their second penalty corner of the game with time running down in the first half. Mesenbrink proceeded to insert a pass to Veenstra, who delivered a blast into the right corner of the goal to give ESU a 1-0 lead.

37:50 | Following a turnover by the Warriors in the midfield, the Raiders went on a fast break with Caitlyn Wink sending a pass onto the stick of Jedeloo, who fired a low strike past Super to even the game at 1-1.

58:01 | After getting back to full strength, Jedeloo found the back of the net for the second time of the game to put Shippensburg ahead 2-1. Sarah Womer sent a pass into the middle of the Warriors' arc where Jedeloo was able to shield off the defender before ripping a shot into goal.

Despite missing the 2020 season, ESU's senior class had a remarkable record of 51 wins and 13 losses Seniors Helen Bradley and Lea Hughes, who has been a part of the program since 2017 helped the Warriors to 68 wins in their careers.

The NFHCA All-America selections will be announced in the next few weeks.
