One Hitter, Late Game Heroics Lift Softball to Sweep of Millersville

Warriors end both games dramatically with a game-ending home run in game one and a walk-off single in game two

STROUDSBURG – After falling in a pair of games to Millersville on Friday, the East Stroudsburg University softball team avenged the losses with a pair of comeback wins to sweep the Marauders on Saturday at Creekview Park.

The Warriors (12-6, 7-5 PSAC East) downed the Marauders (8-4, 4-4 PSAC East), 10-2, in the opening game, behind a one-hit performance from senior Marah Range. Reilly Vicendese completed a two-out comeback in game two with a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the 7th to lift ESU to a 5-4 win.

"We are so proud of the team and their fight," said ESU softball head coach Jaime Wohlbach after the doubleheader. "This team has a heart of a Warrior: one heart, one pulse"

In the game one win, Range (7-2) fired her second and ESU's 32nd one-hitter in program history. The lone hit she conceded was a two-run home run in the second inning. The Sacaramento product fired seven strikeouts and lowered her ERA to 2.47 on the season.

ESU entered the bottom of the 7th of game two trailing Millersville, 4-1. After the first two Warriors were unable to reach base, a single from Marissa Govan, a doubles from Rachel Seiverd and Lexi Wright cut the deficit to 4-3. Without an out to give, back-to-back singles from Molly Nies and Vicendese's walk-off hoisted the Warriors to a sweep.

With two come-from-behind victories today, the Warriors have trailed and eventually won in seven of its 12 victories this season.

GAME ONE

Range's impressive day began from the get-go with a 1-2-3 first inning. Nies was able to advance to third in the bottom of the 1st, but was unable to score for ESU.

In the top of the 2nd, Range walked the opening batter, but was able to fan the next batter. MU's Alyssa Stover would send the Marauders only hit out of the ballpark, as the Marauders took a 2-0 lead after two frames.

The Warriors once again could not score a runner from third base, stranding two runners in the second frame. ESU was able to put runs on the scoreboard in the third inning, as a bases-clearing triple from Govan would surge ESU ahead of the Marauders by a score of 3-2. Govan would score on a wild pitch in the inning, as the Warriors led MU, 4-2, after three frames.

Range continued her success by sitting down the visitors in order in the fourth. ESU tacked on a pair of insurance runs in its half of the fourth, as an RBI triple from Nies and a RBI groundout from Vicendese extended the Warriors' advantage to 6-2. Additionally, ESU added another tally to the scoreboard in the fifth, as an error from the MU second baseman would score Rachel Arner.

Leading 7-2, Millersville put a baserunner on first on a walk, but Range wouldn't allow her to advance in the top of the 6th.

A pair of walks would set up Katherine Donaghue with a 3-run home run in the bottom of the 6th, as ESU reached the eight-run threshold to end the first game in the sixth inning. Range gave up just the one hit in the second inning, retiring 18 of the 21 Marauders she faced.

GAME TWO

An RBI single in the first inning off of Mickayla Pourby lifted MU to an early lead.

The Warrior bats could not carry over momentum from game one, as MU enlarged its advantage to 4-0 on a two-RBI double in the third and an RBI single in the fourth. Leigh Ann Jenkins (4-2) took over pitching duties in the top of the 4th and allowed four hits and one earned run while striking out three in four frames.

In the home half of the fourth, Sofia Cecchin was able to score Vicendese on a single to put the Warriors on the scoreboard. Cecchin would advance to third on a wild pitch, but the native of Italy would be stranded at third base.

Jenkins kept the MU batters quiet in the fifth and sixth. ESU was unable to score a Warrior from second base in its at bats in the fifth stanza and went down in order in the sixth.

The Marauders failed to add any insurance runs in its half of the seventh, with two runners left on base.

The aforementioned bottom of the 7th began with a fly out and groundout. With their backs against the wall and no outs to give, ESU piled on five consecutive hits (Govan single, Seiverd double, Wright double, Nies single, Vicendes single) to complete the four-run walk-off win in dramatic fashion.

ESU returns to action on Fri., April 2nd at Bloomsburg. The Warriors will then host a doubleheader against the Huskies on Sat., April 3rd at 1:00 p.m.
