Late First Half Run Pushes No. 12 Warriors over Shippensburg, 13-4

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Paced by six points from graduate student Hana Cicerelle and an overall impressive defensive performance, the No. 12 East Stroudsburg University lacrosse team picked up its third consecutive win by downing Shippensburg, 13-4, on Saturday afternoon at Robb Sports Complex.

The Warriors (6-1, 5-1 PSAC East) continue to roll and have now outscored its competition by a mark of 54-11 over its past three contests. The Raiders fall to 1-6 and 1-5 in conference play with the loss.

ESU took control by allowing just one goal over the final 42:36 of game, finishing the game on an 11-2 scoring run. 

Cicerelle, who was named PSAC East Division Athlete of the Week on Monday, continued her recent tear with four goals and two assists to lead ESU offensively. The Broadway, N.J. native registered at least three points in every conference game this season and has averaged five points over her past three games. In her career, Cicerelle continues to climb closer to the all-time program leader in goals (155 – 3rd at ESU), assists (81 – 2nd) and points (236 – 2nd).

Shannon Dent, Madison Bagatta and Bailey McMaster each posted two goals. Gianna LeDuc contributed a goal and two assists for three points, while Kiki Fitzpatrick registered a pair of points on a goal and an assist. Emily Mitarotonda rounded out the goal scorers with a single goal and two caused turnovers.

Graduate student goalkeeper Tatyana Petteway picked up her 52nd career win in a Warrior uniform, posting nine saves in net in another impressive performance. She now has 677 career saves, which ranks second at ESU only behind Kelly Wagner (737). In the Division II record book, Petteway now ranks 12th all-time in career saves.

Kayleigh Povrika scooped an impressive six ground balls while causing a pair of turnovers defensively.  

The Warriors trailed briefly at 1-0 after the Raiders capitalized on a man-up opportunity in the first minute. Cicerelle's 20th goal of the 2021 campaign tied the contest up at 27:38.

The Warriors grabbed its first lead of the contest on an unassisted goal from E. Mitarotonda a few minutes later. Shippensburg didn't go away quietly, tying the contest up at the 23:59 mark.

Fitzpatrick and McMaster tallied scored within a minute of each other, as the Warriors grabbed a 4-2 advantage with 18:22 to go in first half.

After the Raiders cut the deficit to 4-3, the Warriors took control with seven unanswered goals over a span of 12 minutes of game clock. Cicerelle posted three of the seven goals, while Bagatta added two in the run.  

The second half featured just four goals combined, with ESU scoring three times. Shippensburg ended the scoring run to make it a 11-4 game. Dent and McMaster scored the final two goals of the game at the 18:20 and 5:26 mark to take home a 13-4 victory.

ESU led Shippensburg in shots on goal (30-13), clears (23-25, 17-19), ground balls (25-17), draw controls (11-8) and free position shots (4-2).

The Warriors return Eiler-Martin Stadium on Tues. April 6, when ESU hosts Bloomsburg.
