DETROIT, MI. – The East Stroudsburg University volleyball team wrapped up the Warrior Invitational on Saturday by dropping matches to Daemen (25-19, 21-25, 11-25, 18-25) and Wayne State (16-25, 22-25, 11-25) at the Matthaei Volleyball Facility.
The Warriors fall to 0-4 on the season as Daemen moved to 1-2 and Wayne State to went to 3-0.
Notables
- Senior Ali Finch had 18 kills, 10 assists and 20 digs across the two matches for the Warriors. Finch just missed a triple-double against Wayne State as she recorded 12 kills, nine digs and eight assists.
- In the two matches, freshman Makaela McComas dished out 29 assists and senior Emily Meredith had 27 digs.
How it Happened – Match One
- After the Warriors jumped out to a 10-4 lead, Daemen rallied to cut their deficit to 12-9. The Warriors would respond by scoring four of the next five points to regain a six point advantage which they would hold the rest of the way to win the set, 25-19.
- With the second set tied at 6-6, the Warriors went on a 4-0 run to take a 10-6 lead which prompted the Wildcats to take a timeout. Daemen came out of the break scoring five straight points to gain a 11-10 advantage which was pushed to 14-11 before the Warriors called a timeout. As the teams traded rallies, the Warriors pulled within two points with the score at 23-21 but following a Daemen timeout, the Wildcats would go on to win the set 25-21 to seven the match at 1-1.
- The third set opened at 4-4 tie but a four point steak by the Wildcats gave them an 8-4 lead. Daemen would eventually push their advantage to 13-7 which prompted the Warriors to take a timeout. Coming out of the break, the Warriors pulled within three at 13-9 but Daemen scored 12 of the next 14 points, including an 8-0 run at the end of the set to win, 25-11.
- ESU jumped out to an 8-5 lead to open the fourth set before the Wildcats rallied to cut the lead to one. The Warriors responded with a 4-0 run to make the score 13-8 which trigged a timeout from Daemen. Out of the stoppage, the Wildcats scored seven of the next eight points to take a 15-14 lead. Daemen would then push their advantage to 19-16 before the Warriors called a timeout. Out of the break, the Wildcats went on another 4-0 run and captured the set 25-17 to win the match 3-1.
How it Happened – Match Two
- It was back and forth to begin the first set as the score was tied at 11-11 before Wayne State went on a 6-0 run to take the lead. Wayne State carried that momentum the rest of the way to win the set, 25-16.
- Neither team was able to separate from each other in the beginning of the second set until Wayne State grabbed a 15-11 lead. After a timeout by ESU, the Warriors rallied to tie the set at 16-16 but Wayne State scored five of the next points to regain a 21-17 advantage. ESU was able to bring the score within one at 23-22, but Wayne State closed out with two straight points to win the set.
- After falling behind by as many as three points to start the third set, ESU rallied to tie the score at 10-10 but Wayne State responded by scoring five of the next six points for a 15-11 lead. Following an ESU timeout, Wayne State maintained momentum the remainder of set to win, 25-17.
