Big Fourth Quarter Propels Bloomsburg Past Women’s Basketball

BLOOMSBURG – The East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team entered the fourth quarter trailing by only four points, but Bloomsburg was able to outscore the Warriors 23-11 in the period to earn a 58-42 victory on Monday night at Nelson Field House.

The Warriors fall to 1-10 overall and 0-8 in conference play while the Huskies win their third-straight game to improve to 7-7 on the year and 4-3 in the PSAC.

ESU and Bloomsburg were neck and neck through the first three quarters with the Huskies leading by no more than four points at the end of each period. However, BU used a 10-2 run over the first 2:58 of the final quarter to put the game out of reach for the Warriors.

Notables

- Cassie Ksiazek scored a team-high 10 points to go with three rebounds, two assists and a steal

- Rachel Capua and Ryan Weise each poured in nine points for the Warriors. Weise added four rebounds, five assists and two steals.

- ESU went 16-of-52 (30.8) from the field and converted just 3-of-14 (21.4) from behind the arc

- The Huskies had three players in double figures including Samantha Brusha with a game-high 16 points. Emma Saxton recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds while Katelin Starr added 12 points. Bloomsburg was 17-of-52 (32.7) from the floor and 6-of-16 (37.5) from the three-point line.

- In the fourth quarter, the Huskies were 7-of-11 (63.6) from the field while the Warriors went 4-of-11 (33.3)

- Bloomsburg had a significant edge at the free throw line going 18-of-26 (69.2) while ESU finished 7-of-12

How It Happened

-  Both teams opened the contest shooting the ball poorly as they combined to go 4-of-18 (22.2) into the media timeout with the Warriors leading 6-4. Over the final 3:06, the Huskies outscored ESU 7-2 to take a 11-8 advantage after the first quarter.

- The Warriors found their form at the beginning of the second period by scoring the first five points to regain a 13-11 advantage after Capua knocked down a three-pointer. Bloomsburg was able to tie the game on a pair of free throws and then used a 5-2 sprint to regain a three-point lead at 18-15. Following the media timeout, ESU and Bloomsburg each scored six points over the final 3:29 to give the Huskies a three-point edge into the half at 24-21.

- ESU reclaimed the lead to begin the second half as they went out in front 27-26 before the Huskies were forced to call a timeout. During the next 5:54, Bloomsburg outscored the Warriors 9-4 to hold a 35-31 lead with only 10 minutes remaining.

- Bloomsburg caught fire to begin the fourth quarter using a 10-2 run over the first 2:58 to extend their edge to 45-33 before a timeout by ESU. The Warriors were unable to overcome throughout the rest of the period as the Huskies held on for 58-42 victory.

ESU stays on the road at the end of this week with a trip to Shippensburg on Saturday. Tip-off between the Warriors and Raiders is set for 1 p.m. inside Heiges Field House.
