EAST STROUDSBURG – A fourth quarter rally by the East Stroudsburg University women's team fell just short against West Chester as the Golden Rams held on for 64-53 victory on Monday night at Koehler Fieldhouse.
The Warriors drop to 1-14 on the season and 0-12 in the PSAC while the Golden Rams improve to 5-10 overall and 3-6 in the conference.
With the victory, West Chester snapped a three-game losing streak to ESU as they earned their first win over the Warriors since 2019.
ESU trailed by 19 entering the fourth quarter but were able to cut their deficit to eight points before the Golden Rams closed out the game on a 5-2 run to secure the win.
Notables
- Ryan Weise finished with an ESU career-high 19 points, as well as six rebounds and three assists. Weise knocked 5-of-7 attempts from the three-point line.
- Izzy Vogel notched 11 points and seven rebounds
- Rachel Capua added seven points, two rebounds and two assists
- ESU finished 20-of-59 (33.9) from the floor and 7-of-23 (30.4) attempts from the three-point line
- Leah Johnson did it all for West Chester as she finished with 21 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and a steal. 10 other Golden Rams scored including Kyra Jefferson with nine points.
- West Chester was 21-of-61 (34.4) from the field and only 2-of-15 (13.3) from behind the arc.
- The Golden Rams converted on 20-of-22 (90.9) free throw attempts while the Warriors were only 6-of-9 (66.7)
- West Chester doubled up the Warriors on points in the paint, 28-14
How It Happened
- After West Chester opened the game with a layup, the Warriors rattled off three consecutive three-pointers from Capua, Vogel and Weise to grab a 9-2 edge. However, the Golden Rams responded over the final 5:54, using a 14-4 run to take a 16-13 lead after the first quarter.
- West Chester carried their momentum over into the second quarter by using a 12-4 run that spanned to the media timeout to push their advantage to 28-17. After the break, the Golden Rams would go onto outscore ESU 8-4 the rest of the period to take a 36-21 into the break.
- Both teams shot the basketball poorly in the third quarter, combining to go 6-of-33 (18.1) with West Chester just outscoring ESU, 9-6, to push their advantage to 45-27 headed into the final 10 minutes.
- The Warriors put together one their best quarters of the season in the fourth as they scored 26 points, going 10-of-16 (62.5) from the field and 4-of-8 (50.0) from the behind the arc. Weise scored 12 of her 19 points in the period, knocking down four three-pointers and converting a layup. ESU was able to cut WCU's lead to eight but with only 31 seconds remaining.
