Mansfield Rallies in Fourth Quarter to Defeat Women’s Basketball in PSAC East Opener

MANSFIELD – Despite leading by six points after the third quarter, the East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team fell to Mansfield, 60-54, after the Mounties outscored the Warriors 27-11 in the fourth quarter on Wednesday evening at Marion Decker Gymnasium.

The Warriors opened PSAC East play by dropping to 1-8 overall and 0-6 in the conference while the Mounties improve to 4-7 on the season and 3-3 in the league.

ESU found themselves trailing by three points at the half but after a strong third quarter, the Warriors regained a 41-36 advantage going into the final 10 minutes. The Mounties caught fire in the fourth using an 18-0 run and a 5:48 scoreless drought by ESU to hold on for a 10-point victory.  

Notables

- Cassie Ksiazek scored in double figures for the fourth consecutive game with 19 points (8-of-15) to go along with seven rebounds, a career-high six blocks, two steals an assist. The redshirt junior became the fifth player since 2002-03 to record six rejections in a game.

- After a one-game absence, Ryan Weise returned with 14 points (5-of-11), three rebounds, five assists and one steal

- Freshman Corrin Gill recorded career-bests with four steals and nine assists, including eight in the first half

- The Warriors were 22-of-56 (39.4) from the field and 5-of-13 (38.5) from behind the arc

- Mansfield featured a balanced scoring line up with four players in double figures, which included a team-high 15 points from Sydney Reed. The Mounties finished 22-of-61 (36.1) from the floor and 6-of-19 (31.6) from the three-point line.

- Mansfield held a huge advantage at the free throw line going 12-of-19 (63.2) while ESU was just 3-of-6 (50.0)

How It Happened

-  The teams traded buckets to open the game as the score was tied at 8-8 headed into the media timeout. Ksiazek scored all eight points for the Warriors on four assists from Gill. Over the final 4:18 of the first quarter, the Mounties outscored ESU by two points to grab a 15-13 lead after the first 10 minutes.

- ESU and Mansfield opened the second quarter in similar fashion, but the Warriors were able to outscore the Mounties 8-6 to tie the game at 21-21 at the 4:19 mark. Following the media timeout, Mansfield edged ESU 7-4 to hold a 28-25 advantage at the half.

- Ksiazek opened the second half for ESU with a pair of layups to put the Warriors back out in front, 29-28. After the Mounties regained the lead with 7:12 remaining, ESU used a 5-0 run to take a four-point advantage into the break. Out of the timeout, the Warriors would go to seven more points to lengthen their lead to eight at 41-35 to end a third quarter strong.

- After Carley Adams scored the first bucket of the fourth quarter, the Mounties proceeded to go on a 13-0 run to regain the lead for the first time since the half. Following a Warriors' timeout, Mansfield scored the next six points before a jumper by Vogel with 3:49 remaining to end nearly a six minute scoring drought. ESU cut their deficit to five at 55-50 with 1:58 to go but the Mounties used a 7-2 run the rest of the way to hold on for the 62-52 win.
